To the Mama at the Gym with the Crying Baby: Don’t Lose Heart. Keep Showing Up.
Hey there, fellow gym mom! You’re not alone in this chaos.
It’s Friday, and despite my intentions to crush a full workout every day this week, reality had other plans. Take Tuesday, for instance—my little one managed to create a mini Niagara Falls in the 20 minutes it took us to get to the gym. Of course, I forgot the extra clothes that day (because when do you really need them?). So, I found myself in the children’s section at Baby Gap instead of breaking a sweat. Retail therapy, right?
The very next day, I tried again, but my workout was cut short by a wailing baby who clearly needed me. We made our exit, and as I left, I spotted another mom who had also just left in a similar fashion. She mentioned she was returning to the gym after having her baby, and I could sense the struggle in her voice. I wanted to encourage her to keep it up, but our little ones were both in full meltdown mode.
Embracing the Journey
Getting back into a gym routine after having a baby is no easy feat. Maybe you never set foot in a gym before, and now you’re motivated to lead a healthier life. Perhaps you’re feeling self-conscious about your weight (and remember to be kind to yourself; you’ve earned that grace). Maybe you were like me, trying hard to stay fit during pregnancy, only to realize how challenging it can be to work out with a tiny human constantly attached to you.
Whatever the reason is for your presence at the gym, I’m grateful you’re there, screaming baby and all. I bet you’re not sleeping well—at least, not consistently. I know you wish results would come faster, but hey, you just grew a human! And I understand the guilt that creeps in when you take time for yourself, but remember that investing in you makes you a better mom.
Your back might be aching from carrying that little one around, and some days, the thought of skipping the gym altogether to live on salad might cross your mind. Please, don’t do that! It’s perfectly normal to feel like a beached whale during those initial weeks of push-ups. You will get stronger, and trust me, you don’t look like a whale (even if it feels that way!).
Keep Showing Up
Making it to the gym on time often feels like a Herculean task. When does that change? And yes, your arms are probably getting toned from baby-lifting, so treat yourself to that cookie you’ve been eyeing all week!
So, mama at the gym, no matter your shape, size, or fitness level, you’re doing an amazing job. This post-baby fitness journey might look different, but it’s more worthwhile than ever before. Please keep bringing that crying baby back with you tomorrow!
