This Little Girl Insisting the Number 4 Doesn’t Exist is the Essence of Toddlerhood

You’ve got to see this adorable standoff between a dad and his daughter over the existence of the number four. When you become a parent, you quickly realize that you’ll find yourself in some rather absurd debates with a toddler. I can’t even count how many times I’ve had to explain that, yes, squares are indeed shapes, despite the passionate protests from my three-year-old. Surprisingly, I’ve never managed to capture these epic arguments on video. Thankfully, one mom did!

NTD Television shared a hilarious clip from @JukinVideo featuring a dad attempting to convince his little girl that the number four is indeed real. This two-minute exchange, where the dad insists, “No, it’s one-two-three-four-five,” while his daughter adamantly declares, “No! It’s one-two-three-five,” is bound to resonate with parents who’ve found themselves repeating basic facts to someone still mastering zippers.

You’ve got to admire her determination. One viewer remarked, “She’s so cute and convincing that I started rechecking my counting… one, two, three, four(?), five??? Ummmm. Yes! Yes??” And we absolutely cheer for her confidence. But if you’ve ever raised a strong-willed child, you know that while their tenacity is admirable, it might also drive you to the brink by their teenage years. Seriously, how much can a brain handle?

You can’t help but feel for the dad, who appears to be a teacher, when he exclaims, “How you gonna tell me? I teach this every day!” At that point, he’s resorted to sharing his professional background to prove he knows what he’s talking about. When a tiny person is that convinced of your wrongness, it’s tempting to whip out your resume and say, “Do you see this? I have a degree in economics! Numbers are my thing!” Before long, you’re reminiscing about your college days and calling colleagues to back you up—and you’ve already lost the argument.

Towards the end of the clip, the dad, clearly exasperated, states, “You’re skipping four! You can’t just leave four out!” before finally giving up. Then mom steps in, saying, “Ava, count to four.” Ava cheerfully counts, “One-two-three-four,” and accepts her defeat. Just like that, she’s onto her next distraction. Kids, right?

Kudos to her dad for holding back from shouting, “I told you so!” and giving mom a high-five; I might not have managed that. Of course, my husband has a tendency to sing, “Dad is the champion, my friends… and Dad keeps on fighting till the end…” after winning a round of Uno against the kids, so maybe I should keep my opinions to myself.

This couple exemplifies patience, light-hearted parenting, and the challenges of adulthood, and we applaud them for sharing such a delightful video.

In summary, this charming video captures the quintessential essence of toddlerhood—unwavering confidence in their own reality, even when it defies logic. It serves as a reminder that parenting is filled with moments of laughter, frustration, and a healthy dose of humility.
