Family Honors Grandma’s Memory with Over 100 Handmade Quilts
In a heartwarming display of love and remembrance, a family from Upstate New York transformed their beloved grandmother’s funeral into a quilted tribute, showcasing more than 100 of her handcrafted quilts.
Margaret Davis, who sadly passed away at the age of 86, was not just a talented quilter; she was also known as a spirited traveler, dedicated gardener, and a voracious reader. Her family wanted to celebrate her life and creativity, so they adorned the church pews with her stunning quilts. Her granddaughter, Lily Davis, shared a touching photo on Reddit that quickly gained traction, racking up over 1,000 comments.
“I have a couple of her quilts that I use every day,” Lily told Home Insemination Kit. “They are a constant reminder of her boundless love for us.” In her post, Lily noted that Margaret crafted quilts for life’s milestones, including graduations and weddings. “Before she left us, she made four additional quilts, one for each of her unmarried grandchildren to be given on our wedding days.”
With a family that includes five children and 11 grandchildren, that’s a whole lot of quilting! Lily wrote, “She treated each of us like we were her favorite, even including my stepsister who wasn’t technically her grandchild. That never mattered to this incredible woman.”
Lily fondly remembers summers spent with cousins at her grandmother’s riverside home, a place that felt like magic. Margaret was also known for her adventurous spirit, traveling the globe with her husband despite her father’s disapproval. They even managed to sneak through the Iron Curtain to visit the USSR in the 1960s!
The outpouring of love for Margaret in the comments section reminded many of their own grandmothers, prompting reflections on what it means to live a full life. One user even got teary-eyed (and who could blame them?).
The beauty of this story lies in its portrayal of a vibrant woman who inspired everyone around her. “Her quilts are everywhere in our homes—on couches, beds, and walls—serving as constant reminders of her love,” Lily shared. “She was my role model, and I miss her every day.”
In summary, Margaret’s quilts not only warmed her family physically but also kept her spirit alive in their hearts, showcasing the power of love and creativity to transcend even the deepest loss.
