I Thought I Might Indulge in a Relaxing Bubble Bath…

These days, my schedule feels tighter than a pair of pants after the holidays, and my bathroom has morphed into a shared space that screams “family chaos” rather than a tranquil escape. With a stool for my little ones to reach the toilet and a shower curtain that looks like a rainbow explosion, I find my opportunities for a peaceful soak few and far between. So, when a sliver of time for some adult relaxation pops up, I seize the moment.
I grab my candle, a bath pillow, and a towel that’s supposed to be fluffy but may have seen better days. It’s not exactly pristine, but it has been drying off my kiddos after their baths since I last did laundry.
There’s a tray that stretches across the tub, perfect for a good book and my glass of wine. I pour myself a generous serving, ignoring the fill line, and start rummaging through my room for that elusive book I started eight months ago. It’s definitely in here somewhere—maybe it took a detour into the diaper bag? What was I thinking, assuming I’d have time to read during an outing?
Flipping on the bathroom light nearly ruins the vibe; that harsh fluorescent glow does nothing for relaxation. Luckily, I find a nightlight from my son’s room that casts a softer, calming glow—thank you, Spiderman.
I strike a match and ignite my candle, the same one I use to mask any fridge odors and give the illusion that I bake when friends visit. The label claims it’s “Homemade Cookies,” but let’s be real, it smells more like “Vanilla AF.”
Pulling back the shower curtain, I’m greeted by a masterpiece of bath crayon art on the wall and a drain that’s clearly seen better days. I toss a few slimy toys into the sink and grab the cleaning spray. The fumes? Surprisingly soothing. I spray a little extra into the air just for good measure.
After scrubbing the tub, I turn on the water, only to discover I’m out of bath bombs or salts. Digging through the cabinet, I unearth a bottle of Paw Patrol bubble bath. Unscrewing Chase’s head, I watch the blue liquid transform into a delightful cloud of fruity foam. Between that, the Vanilla AF candle, and the cleaning spray, I’m starting to feel a nice buzz.
Stripping off my tank top and leggings—goodbye, maternity wear—I toss them into the hamper and, lo and behold, my book reemerges! Of course, my toddler has been using it as a treasure chest for the last few months.
Finally, I sink into the bath. The water is lukewarm, a reminder that multitasking while running the dishwasher isn’t always the best idea. But a bit of lukewarm water isn’t going to ruin my moment of bliss. I can always add more hot water later, right?
As I adjust to the temperature, I take a long sip of my chardonnay—it’s warmer than my bath, but still a welcome distraction. Just as I’m settling in, my child bursts in, announcing, “I need to go now!” After taking his seat on the toilet, he asks what I’m doing and then requests to join me in the tub. I gently remind him that this is Mommy’s time, and without it, I might just turn into a grumpy monster.
“But you’re already really grumpy and yell all the time,” he quips, and I can’t help but wonder why. “Wipe me,” he adds, and I can’t help but roll my eyes.
Back in my tub, book open and wine in hand, I turn on the faucet for a hot water refill. The bubbles are mostly gone, but as I let the water flow, I feel my tension melting away. I chug the rest of my wine and try to recall where I left off in my book. The house is quiet now, and my eyelids start to droop. Surely, my husband has put the kids to bed? The bubbles have vanished, and I reluctantly pull the drain lever with my toe.
Maybe next time, I’ll just opt for a nap instead.
