Mom Issues Urgent Warning After Playground Incident
An Australian mother is speaking out to alert other families after her daughter suffered a serious injury on the playground. The incident involved a common item that many kids have: a sun hat with a strap.
Gina Thompson’s six-year-old daughter, Lily, nearly choked while playing due to the hat’s cord getting caught on a spiral slide. The hat, purchased from Lily’s school uniform shop, was supposed to have a safety clip that would release under pressure, but it didn’t function as intended. Fortunately, a quick-thinking friend was there to help Lily out of the precarious situation before it escalated.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Thompson wrote, “Attention parents! My daughter was nearly strangled by her hat while playing at school. The supposed safety clip didn’t release, and it could have been much worse!” A doctor later informed Thompson that if Lily had been stuck for just a few more moments, she could have suffered life-threatening injuries.
To illustrate her point, Thompson included some unsettling photos of Lily that will make any parent’s heart race. The culprit? The very sun hat that was meant to keep Lily safe while playing outside.
Thompson urged parents to check their children’s hats, saying, “Please, either ensure that the clip releases under pressure or just remove the cord entirely.” Following the incident, the local school announced it would halt sales of that particular hat style and seek safer alternatives.
Thompson believes that the hazards associated with these hats should be taken seriously. “No cords, no clips—they’re a danger. Thankfully, we were able to bring our kids home this time, but it could easily end differently next time,” she remarked. “There’s a real risk that we could get that phone call one day.”
If you’re concerned about this issue, a quick search shows that while hats with quick-release cords are available in the U.S., there are also many options without any cords at all. For more information on parenting and safety tips, check out our post on home insemination kits.
In summary, Thompson’s warning serves as a vital reminder for parents to carefully scrutinize children’s accessories, especially those used during play. By sharing her family’s near-miss, she hopes to prevent similar incidents and raise awareness about potential dangers lurking in everyday items.
