Teen Walks 10 Miles to Work Each Day Receives a Heartwarming Surprise from Coworkers
Meet Jake Thompson, a 19-year-old who’s taking on far more responsibility than most of his peers. With a mother who is unable to work and siblings depending on him, Jake works full-time unloading boxes at UPS for $11.90 an hour to support his family.
For the past year and a half, he’s been doing this incredible job, but here’s the kicker—he didn’t have a car. Instead, he’s been trekking a grueling five miles each way to get to work. With his shifts starting at 4:00 a.m., Jake has been waking up well before dawn to make it on time.
Fortunately, his coworkers decided to step in and make his life a little easier. Journalist Kyle Richards shared Jake’s inspiring story on Facebook, highlighting the challenges he faced just to get to work. His colleagues at the UPS center in Birmingham, Alabama, rallied together and collected $1,100 to buy him a used Jeep Cherokee, which they proudly presented to him.
When Jake’s supervisor, Mark Collins, shared the news, he playfully bantered about how much the team admired him. “This guy is a hard worker,” Collins said, clearly emotional. “He wants this job so much that he walks from way out of town.” He then revealed, “We’ve got some good news for you. You won’t need to walk anymore; you’ve got wheels now!” Jake’s reaction was priceless—he broke down in tears, expressing his heartfelt gratitude. “I wish I could thank everyone individually. This is really going to change my life,” he said.
In addition to the car, they also contributed $300 towards his liability insurance, ensuring he could drive safely. Jake had previously turned down assistance from his older siblings and coworkers, preferring to tackle things on his own. But now, his hard work has paid off.
Looking ahead, Jake has ambitions to advance within UPS. “I want to move up to becoming a driver, and with that money, I plan to invest it wisely. I also really want to go to school for a degree in business and music production,” he shared. With his determination, we have no doubt he’ll reach those goals. But for now, Jake’s just excited to take his girlfriend for a spin in his very own car.
