In a heartening endeavor, a small group in Ohio is on a mission to raise an impressive $100,000 for LGBTQ youth in their area in a mere 30 days. What they’ve achieved so far is extraordinary, demonstrating that if they can make this happen, so can we!

“This is wonderfully crazy,” says Emily Carter, a member of the 66-strong leadership program called Next Level Gives, dedicated to supporting the Kaleidoscope Youth Center. “We like to think of ourselves as 66 enthusiastic nuts on a mission.”

Raising such a hefty sum in such a short time is no small feat, especially given the current climate for LGBTQ youth in America. However, this group is determined to reach their goal. “We’ll push the limits of what’s possible to turn the impossible into reality,” Carter tells Home Insemination Kit.

These individuals, who were once strangers, come from diverse backgrounds, with some identifying as LGBTQ themselves. They are undergoing training to not only improve themselves but also to create a positive impact in their communities. Their campaign is about more than just money (though that helps!); it’s about fostering a sense of worth, love, and belonging among all teens, while taking actionable steps to support the youth center.

“With today’s headlines, it often feels like the LGBTQ community, especially its youth, isn’t being protected. We want to change that narrative, not just with words but with our actions,” Carter explains.

Kaleidoscope Youth Center is more than just a facility for LGBTQ youth; many consider it their sanctuary. It provides a safe haven for young people to express themselves, engage in activities, and access vital services like STI/HIV testing. As the need for such spaces grows, especially now, the center has become a cornerstone of the community.

The alarming statistics surrounding the treatment of LGBTQ youth are enough to make anyone’s heart ache. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) highlights that negative attitudes lead to increased risks of violence, bullying, and mental health issues. A 2015 GLSEN survey revealed that a staggering 85% of LGBTQ students experienced verbal harassment, and 32% missed school due to feeling unsafe.

At Kaleidoscope, youth aged 12-20 find not only support but so do their parents, who can participate in support groups. “I heard about one mom who drove over 250 miles just to bring her child to Kaleidoscope,” recalls Carter. Their goal is to extend their outreach, especially to those in rural areas, with funds also aiding the center’s daily operations.

As of now, the group has raised over $31,000, with just five days left to meet their ambitious target. They are ramping up efforts with various fundraising events in the coming week. It’s hard work, but their commitment and collaboration are genuinely inspiring.

Emily Carter reflects on a valuable lesson learned during this journey: “When you focus on giving to others, you often end up receiving so much more.”
