Today is International Women’s Day, a day that celebrates the strength and achievements of women everywhere. In light of recent events, it’s also become known as the Day Without A Woman, a time when women take a stand to show how vital they are to society. It’s the perfect moment to shine a spotlight on the next generation of young girls who are ready to lead the charge for change.

Twitter user Mia recently shared a delightful note that her friend, a fourth-grade teacher, discovered tucked under a student’s desk. The note, likely from a young girl, reads: “Do you want to join a club for female empowerment? We are the leaders.”

Absolutely, yes!

First of all, can we please join? We might not be 10 years old anymore, but who couldn’t use a little empowerment? Send us an invite too! Oh, and we have a super cool empowered woman backing this club as well.

Secondly, let’s take a trip down memory lane to our own fourth-grade days. I remember belting out tunes from “Aladdin” and “The Little Mermaid” while playing on snowbanks at recess. I was all about “The Baby-Sitters Club” and glued to “Saved by the Bell.” My biggest activist effort was probably drawing a few posters about saving the whales back in the trendy ’90s.

Back then, feminism and empowerment weren’t topics my mom or any other women in my life discussed. But now? Little girls have the world at their fingertips. We’re engaging in meaningful conversations about women’s roles and representation. We’re mindful of the movies and books that showcase strong female characters with goals beyond just finding a prince. We’re encouraging our daughters to excel in math and science instead of labeling those subjects as “for boys,” something I often heard growing up.

In short, girls today have an awareness and experience that we could only dream of at their age. From attending Women’s Marches with their moms to watching inspiring films like “Hidden Figures,” they get to see just how capable they are. While there’s still progress to be made, this student’s note is a bright sign that we’re heading in the right direction.
