Little Girl Silences Cashier Trying to Sell Her a Doll That ‘Looks Like’ Her
In a world brimming with ignorance, it’s often a child who can teach us the most valuable lessons. Take for instance the story of little Mia, a two-year-old who recently demonstrated this when she was shopping with her mom, Lisa. After successfully mastering potty training, Mia was rewarded with a special gift—a new doll.
According to Lisa, they had made a deal: if Mia used the potty like a champ for a month, she could choose a “special prize.” Naturally, Mia picked a doll, and as they approached the register, the cashier asked her if she was headed to a birthday party. When both Mia and Lisa looked confused, the cashier leaned in closer and said, “Are you sure that’s the doll you want, sweetie? She doesn’t really look like you. We have others that do.”
Lisa felt her anger start to bubble up. But before she could respond, little Mia chimed in, “Yes, she does! She’s a doctor just like I’m a doctor! I’m a pretty girl, and she’s a pretty girl. Look at her pretty hair and her stethoscope!”
And there you have it, Mia! Kids don’t categorize others based on race, gender, or age. They see the world through a lens of inclusivity, and it’s society that teaches them otherwise. The cashier’s insistence that Mia’s doll should resemble her was simply baffling.
Diversity is something to celebrate, not shy away from. Every skin tone, hair type, and eye color adds to the beautiful tapestry of humanity. Why are we still having these conversations in 2023?
Eventually, the cashier dropped the line of questioning, and Mia left the store proudly clutching her new doll. Lisa reflected on the experience, affirming her belief: “We aren’t born thinking color matters. Every shade of skin is beautiful, just like every hair and eye color.”
