Gifted: A Heartwarming Tale of Non-Traditional Family
The concept of family has evolved significantly from the classic image of a mom, dad, 2.5 kids, and a dog. And thank goodness for that! Nowadays, families come in a delightful array of shapes and sizes, with the only true constant being a deep-rooted love for each other.
The film Gifted, which hits select theaters on April 7, beautifully encapsulates this idea. Chris Evans stars as Frank Adler, a devoted single uncle raising his exceptionally gifted niece, Lily (the charming Emma Brooks). Alongside them are their supportive landlady and friend, Sarah (played by the wonderful Kelly Johnson), and Lily’s enthusiastic teacher, Maxine (the talented Sophie Adams). Together, these characters create a nurturing environment that feels like family. However, tension arises when Frank’s desire to provide Lily with a typical upbringing clashes with his mother (portrayed by the formidable Alice Monroe), who has grand plans for her mathematical whiz of a granddaughter. The film sends a heartfelt message about how families we choose can be just as significant as those we are born into.
The chemistry among the cast shines through, both on and off the screen. During a recent press event, it was evident that the actors had formed a close-knit bond. Emma absolutely adores Chris, even attempting to curb his colorful language with a playful swear jar on set—$5 for minor offenses and $10 for the doozies! Meanwhile, Chris couldn’t help but sing Emma’s praises, declaring, “This kid’s going to take the world by storm,” as if he were her proud uncle.
Kelly and Sophie also shared a genuine camaraderie, reminiscing about their time together in Atlanta, filled with laughter and inside jokes. They exhibited a beautiful friendship and mutual admiration. Even though her role was minor, Kelly made it a point to be on set every day, just to soak in the magic of their performances.
If you appreciate the beauty of diverse family structures, Gifted is a must-see. And don’t forget to bring a tissue!
