Happy Equal Pay Day! Trump’s Reversal of Workplace Protections for Women
Just when you thought we might be making progress, news breaks that sexual harassment in the workplace has remained stagnant for almost four decades. To add insult to injury, right before Equal Pay Day, Donald Trump decided to roll back crucial workplace protections established during Barack Obama’s presidency, which aimed to create safer working environments for women.
In 2014, Obama enacted the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Order, mandating that companies with federal contracts comply with a set of 14 labor and civil rights laws designed to protect workers. But as of March 27, those protections have been tossed aside, thanks to Trump.
Among these laws was the elimination of “forced arbitration clauses.” These clauses often trap victims of sexual harassment in private company proceedings, effectively silencing them and allowing companies to hide allegations of misconduct. As Rachel Greene, an advocate for workplace equality, noted, “These arbitrations are like secret courts where victims often feel too afraid to come forward.”
Moreover, the Fair Pay order was instrumental in ensuring transparency regarding pay equity for women. With Trump’s revocation of Obama’s order, federal contractors are no longer obligated to prove that they pay women the same as men for the same jobs. They can simply continue the status quo, which may include paying minorities less without any accountability.
And for those who might argue that compliant companies will still follow the old rules, let’s remember the 2010 Government Accountability Office investigation that revealed widespread civil rights violations among companies profiting from government contracts.
So on this Equal Pay Day, let’s reflect on what has been lost. Want to read more about workplace equality? Check out our post on intracervicalinsemination.com. In summary, while we celebrate Equal Pay Day, we must also recognize the significant setbacks that women face in the workplace, especially with the rollback of protections that were designed to foster equality and safety.
