Recycle Your Old Car Seat at Target and Score a Discount on a New One
Ah, Target. Just when we thought our hearts couldn’t swell any bigger for you, you go ahead and make recycling our old car seats a breeze! Not only are you helping us declutter our lives by taking those bulky plastic beasts off our hands, but you’re also doing your part for Mother Earth. Seriously, is there anything you can’t do?
From Monday, April 17 through Sunday, April 30, you can haul your used car seat to any Target store across the nation. In return, you’ll snag a sweet 20% off coupon for a new car seat, valid until May 31. In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Target has teamed up with Terracycle, a company that champions hard-to-recycle waste. They’re turning those old car seats into new products—like bags and gardening supplies—not just more car seats (we’re kidding, but wouldn’t that be something?).
Let’s face it, tossing a used car seat in the trash feels wrong. You don’t have to be an environmental superhero to feel guilty about sending that big chunk of plastic to a landfill. Sure, there are a few recycling programs out there, but they aren’t exactly abundant. Toys R’ Us has their Great Trade-In event a couple of times a year, which has resulted in them collecting over a million trade-ins. That’s a whole lot of car seats!
To give you an idea of how popular recycling programs can be, Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon, which accepts used car seats year-round, recycled just over 6 tons of them in 2014. Target hopes to collect more than 700,000 pounds of car seat material during this event—material that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.
After a successful test run in 90 stores last September, Target decided to expand this initiative. You’ll find collection bins in the baby section or near the front of the store. Just locate a team member to claim your coupon. Honestly, does anyone else feel a little anxious picturing mountains of car seats and hunting down an employee? But hey, Target has been around the block before, so we’re sure they’ve got a game plan.
We are absolutely loving this initiative. Seriously, we can’t get enough! So, round up your old car seat and prepare for your trip to Target next week.

In summary, Target is making it easier for us to recycle old car seats while giving us a great discount on new ones. This eco-friendly initiative not only helps reduce waste but also makes it easier to shop for essentials. So get ready to declutter and save!
