40 Reasons Kids Make the Absolute Worst Roommates

If you’ve ever shared a living space, you likely have some horror stories to tell. From that one roommate who hogs the hot water to the one who guzzles the last of the milk when you’re craving a bowl of cereal, communal living can be a challenge. Now, if your roommates were as inconsiderate as kids can be, you’d probably be searching for new living arrangements faster than you can say “normal and polite.”

But no one really prepares you for the fact that kids are the absolute worst housemates. Thank goodness we love them! Their daily antics often make you wonder how you’d react if a typical roommate behaved like this:

  • Running around the house in the nude
  • Sitting on the couch sans clothing, bare skin on the cushions
  • Standing in front of windows, completely unclothed (hey, neighbors!)
  • Leaving the front door wide open and letting out all that “bought air”
  • Leaving lights on everywhere, including closets
  • Surprising you with unflushed surprises in the toilet
  • Devouring all your snacks, including the hidden “good stuff”
  • Taking bites out of fruits and leaving them in the fridge
  • Deceptively stashing empty food containers in the pantry
  • Leaving wrappers scattered around the house, even between couch cushions
  • Inviting friends over and expecting you to feed them (and tolerate them)
  • Storming into your bedroom (or bathroom) without knocking
  • Leaving the sink crusted with toothpaste
  • Creating puddles on the floor after bath time, despite the bath mat being right there
  • Being generally loud and often downright obnoxious
  • Engaging in heated arguments over trivial matters with you and other “roommates”
  • Taking over the TV with ridiculous shows you never wanted to watch
  • Using up all the tape, Band-Aids, and Post-it Notes
  • Depleting soap and shampoo faster than you can restock
  • Running through all the shared data—and everything else too
  • Stashing food in their rooms until it rots and begins to stink
  • Leaving dirty clothes strewn across the house
  • Expecting you to do their laundry without a word of thanks
  • Rummaging noisily through your drawers
  • Leaving drawers hanging open like they’re part of the décor
  • Asking prying questions about your personal life
  • Traipsing in mud everywhere, then not cleaning it up
  • Keeping their rooms in such disarray you’d need a hazmat suit
  • Waking you up at ungodly hours for various unpleasant reasons
  • Constantly asking to sleep in your bed
  • Bringing home stray animals with fleas and other problems
  • Interrupting your phone conversations
  • Using the last of the toilet paper and not replacing the roll
  • Playing the same songs on repeat until you lose your mind
  • Crying loud enough to wake the dead on a regular basis
  • Complaining endlessly about the simplest chores
  • Not contributing a single penny

It’s hard to fathom living with someone who behaves like this for long, yet here we are, not just tolerating it but bending over backwards to keep our little rascals happy. Ah, the joys of parenthood!

In summary, kids may be adorable, but they sure know how to test your limits as roommates. From their chaotic habits to their complete disregard for common courtesy, living with them can sometimes feel like a never-ending trial. But at the end of the day, their love and laughter make it all worthwhile.
