“So, what are your kids up to this summer?”
As I sip my coffee with my friend Sarah under the warm spring sun, I can’t help but feel the impending doom of summer vacation approaching. In just a few weeks, the days of quiet mornings will vanish, replaced by 55 long days of managing boredom and pantry raids.
Summer means sunscreen struggles, endless YouTube videos, and the backdoor slamming shut at least 4,000 times a day. And, of course, it’s time to consider summer camps—if your budget allows it, that is.
Honestly, I could probably buy a used minivan instead of sending my two kids to local summer camp programs. The average annual tuition for a public community college is around $3,400. So, why on earth should a summer camp cost more than a year of higher education? Seriously, summer camps, what gives?
Back in my day, summer camp was a simple affair. My mom would roll to a stop in her old blue station wagon, and I’d tumble out with a bunch of kids in matching T-shirts. We’d be greeted by enthusiastic teenage counselors, and the day would be filled with crafting friendship bracelets and playing dodgeball. It was affordable, straightforward, and a blast for everyone involved.
Not anymore! Now, summer camps have morphed into a massive industry, raking in a whopping $18 billion, according to the American Camp Association. Let that sink in—a staggering amount for our kids’ summer adventures! There are over 14,000 camp options in the U.S. alone, and they’ve become a far cry from the no-frills camps of yesteryear.
Today, kids can choose from French Immersion Camp, Etiquette Camp, and even Explosives Camp (yes, that’s a real thing). Honestly, my kid can create enough backyard explosions for a fraction of $1,400; we’ll be sticking to “Use Up the Old Fireworks and Don’t Burn Down the House” Camp this summer.
For working parents, summer can throw a wrench into even the best-laid plans. We need camps to keep our kids occupied while we try to maintain some semblance of productivity. We’re willing to shell out cash for these quirky themed camps just to ensure our kids stay entertained—even if it means sacrificing a small fortune in the process.
But seriously, summer camps, can you tone down those sky-high prices? I can’t be the only one cringing as I watch our bank account dwindle while paying for days of summertime fun. Is there a camp out there that costs $50 and lasts through the summer? #askingforafriend
Due to the cost of these camps, I’ve had to get a bit creative with our summer plans. Sure, my kids will attend a week of scouting camp each, but we’ve mostly ditched organized day camps. I’d rather invest our money in family activities or even a week-long tropical getaway, which might actually be cheaper!
While my son would jump at the chance to attend Game of Thrones Camp (yep, that exists), and my daughter would be thrilled about Farm Camp in Massachusetts, I think their summer will be just as enjoyable at “Here’s a Popsicle, Now Go Ride Your Bike” Camp and “Get Outside and Find Something to Do Before Mommy Loses It” Camp.
I have fond memories of my own simple township camp days, but I still secretly wish my mom would have surprised us with Space Camp, just like in that beloved ’80s movie. I’m sure that was affordably priced!
This summer, I’m all about keeping it simple and budget-friendly while still making the most of our time together. For more insights on family planning and activities, check out this excellent resource on pregnancy and home insemination.
In summary, summer camps have become far too expensive for many families, pushing parents to explore more affordable options for their kids’ summer experiences. While themed camps may sound enticing, traditional summer fun can often be achieved without breaking the bank.
