My kids are always eager to enlighten me on the latest trends. They assume that just because I live in leggings and haven’t tuned into Top 40 radio that I’m completely out of touch with what’s cool. Sure, my style might not be “on fleek,” and I might not recognize half the names in the music charts, but I can still rap every word of “Rapper’s Delight,” thank you very much.
Capitalizing on my ’80s nostalgia, my kids love to “introduce” me to new toys that they’re convinced are revolutionary. They think they’ve stumbled upon the next big thing, saving me from my outdated pop-culture ignorance. However, many of these “new” toys are the very same ones I cherished as a child. As the saying goes, everything old eventually returns.
Rubik’s Cube
Right now, my kids can’t get enough of the Rubik’s Cube. But these days, they come in an array of bizarre shapes. There’s a triangular “cube” and a hexagonal version that makes my head spin. A few minutes of twisting and turning leaves me wanting to toss it across the room, yet it manages to keep my kids entertained for a while (okay, maybe just minutes, but I’ll take it).
Spirograph
I adored the Spirograph as a kid, so I was overjoyed when my son received one as a gift a few months back. There’s something oddly therapeutic about creating intricate, flowery designs that I can’t quite put into words.
My Little Pony
Who didn’t adore My Little Ponies growing up? Seriously, if you didn’t love these beautiful creatures, we might have a problem. I was obsessed with them, and I’m thrilled they’re making a comeback—across all genders! Personally, I aspire to be Princess Twilight Sparkle when I grow up. #LifeGoals
Mad Libs
During long family road trips, I would pass the time doing Mad Libs with my siblings, and now my kids do the same. What’s not to enjoy? It’s silly and entertaining, plus it sneaks in some grammar lessons—even if their favorite nouns tend to be a bit immature, like poop, penis, or pee.
