Tennessee Takes the Plunge: Community College Now Free for All Adults!
If education is the key to unlocking our future, consider Tennessee the master locksmith. The state has just made history by becoming the first in the United States to offer tuition-free community college to nearly all adult residents. Talk about a game changer!
This week, state lawmakers greenlit an expansion of the Tennessee Promise program, which originally launched in 2014 to provide free tuition for recent high school graduates attending community colleges or technical schools. Now, adults aged 24 and older, who lack an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, can join the fun for free starting as soon as the fall semester of 2018!
Governor Jake Thompson, a strong proponent of education, is expected to sign this bill soon. He believes that investing in education is the best strategy for job growth. “In Tennessee, we’ve recognized that an education plan is the most effective jobs plan,” Thompson stated. “If we want to prepare Tennesseans for the workforce, we must ensure they have access to quality education. Just like with Tennessee Promise, we’re sending a clear message: education beyond high school is vital for the Tennessee we envision.”
Thompson aims to boost the percentage of residents with a college degree to 55% by 2025. To qualify for the expanded Promise program, applicants must have lived in the state for at least a year, maintain a 2.0 GPA, enroll as part-time students, and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
While other states have implemented similar programs for high school graduates, never before has a state opened the doors for all adults, irrespective of their educational background. San Francisco is set to follow suit this fall, and Rhode Island lawmakers are eyeing a similar initiative.
Research indicates that holding any degree significantly lowers unemployment risks and boosts earning potential. The U.S. Labor Department’s findings clearly show that higher education correlates with higher income. In other words, the more degrees you have, the fatter your paycheck can be!
Consider all the parents who never had the chance to attend college or who want to switch careers but feel held back by rising tuition costs. Tennessee is shattering those economic barriers, providing access to brighter futures for individuals, families, and communities alike.
Investing in education at all levels is crucial for the nation’s advancement. These individuals will bring fresh ideas and innovations that propel us forward, no matter where they currently stand in life. Here’s hoping this free-tuition wave sweeps across the country sooner rather than later!
