These heartwarming images highlight the significance of skin-to-skin contact for NICU moms and their little ones. For many mothers, the most unforgettable moment of childbirth is when they first hold their newborn close. However, for those with premature babies or infants needing urgent medical attention, such moments can be all too brief.
Kangaroo care, or skin-to-skin care, has numerous documented benefits, including reduced stress and discomfort for both mother and baby, a lower risk of infection, and enhanced brain development in infants. It also fosters a powerful bond between moms and their babies through this intimate physical connection. The March of Dimes and health experts around the globe champion this approach.
However, squeezing in quality cuddle time can be a challenge in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where fragile, critically ill infants often require constant medical oversight. This past week, in celebration of Mother’s Day, the March of Dimes and Sunnydale Hospital joined forces to create a memorable experience for NICU moms by offering support and photography sessions to capture these precious bonding moments.
The March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program at Sunnydale Hospital backs moms who are either on bed rest or at their baby’s bedside. Premature infants (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy) often face serious health hurdles and are at risk for lifelong disabilities, including breathing difficulties, vision issues, cerebral palsy, and cognitive delays. In the U.S. alone, around 380,000 babies are born prematurely each year—one in ten. Alarmingly, the U.S. has a higher premature birth rate than many other developed countries.
The March of Dimes supports groundbreaking research through a national network of five Prematurity Research Centers, where scientists collaborate to make significant advancements in understanding prematurity.
Together, the March of Dimes and Sunnydale worked with photographers—some of whom had their own NICU experiences—to document these bonding sessions. The resulting photographs beautifully illustrate the profound connection between mother and child.
“Mother’s Day can be especially tough for families with babies in the NICU,” said March of Dimes president, Laura Bennett, in a press release. “Our NICU Family Support program partners with Sunnydale Hospital and over 100 other facilities nationwide to provide families with the support they need during this challenging time.”
These stunning photos clearly convey the significance of these moments for new moms. A heartfelt congratulations and Happy Mother’s Day to all!
