Hurricane Matthew Sparks Special Photo Shoot for Eight Expecting Moms
Last fall, Hurricane Matthew swept through the Lowcountry, leaving a trail of destruction and a surprising silver lining: eight stunning expectant mothers. Photographer Jamie Thompson seized the opportunity to capture the beauty of life amid the storm’s chaos, resulting in a heartwarming photo shoot that celebrated these moms-to-be.
In her Facebook post, Thompson described the scene: “In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit our area, leading to mandatory evacuations. While some evacuated, others stayed put, facing down the storm as trees and homes were damaged.” (Spoiler: these amazing women were among those who hunkered down.)
When you’re stuck indoors with only candlelight and your partner nearby, what’s a gal to do? Tackle that never-ending home improvement list? Nope! Instead, you might just find yourselves getting cozy in more ways than one.
Thompson shared that she reached out on social media, looking for “hurricane moms.” Her post garnered enthusiastic responses, though coordinating the two shoots proved a challenge. We can only imagine her initial inquiry sounded something like, “Hey, so… during the storm, did anyone… you know, end up with a little surprise?”
As the community began to recover from the storm’s aftermath, it became clear that while many things were lost, eight beautiful new lives were on the way. “I organized and styled two special photo shoots for these incredible moms who are carrying little miracles conceived during Hurricane Matthew!” Thompson explained.
In case you need a refresher, Hurricane Matthew was a formidable storm, becoming the first Category Five hurricane in the Atlantic since 2007. Its impact prompted mass evacuations along the coast, and over half a million residents in South Carolina faced power outages as the cyclone passed through.
Thompson noted that most of the women didn’t know each other before the shoot, but she loved watching them bond during the sessions. “I created a group for the moms to plan the shoots, and they now use that space to support each other through their pregnancies! It’s wonderful to see them connect!” With all the moms living around South Carolina and most expecting girls (except for one), this could be the beginning of beautiful friendships for both the women and their future little ones.
Naturally, one burning question remains: will there be a follow-up shoot once the babies arrive? “Absolutely!” Thompson exclaimed. “I would LOVE to plan a follow-up once all the hurricane babies are here!”
