Beyond One-Dimensional Activism: Embracing Multiple Causes Simultaneously
As parents, our minds are often a whirlwind of thoughts. We juggle homework supervision while planning dinner, search for venues for one child’s birthday party while on hold with the doctor about another’s health concerns. We advocate for various needs of our children and share our worries with fellow parents late into the night. This complexity of parenthood is universal and irrefutable.
So, it’s incredibly frustrating when some people struggle to comprehend how an individual can care about multiple social issues at the same time. Mention refugees, and some will argue we should prioritize “our own,” whatever that means. Bring up women’s health rights, and someone might shout about the unborn. Raise concerns about undocumented children facing deportation, and you’ll hear accusations of neglecting veterans, the homeless, and even that overworked Uncle Bob.
Enough already. Let’s set the record straight: the human heart can indeed hold compassion for multiple causes simultaneously. We can empathize with numerous heartbreaking stories and desire good for all, not just for those who fit into a narrow category. Advocating for one issue doesn’t negate our concern for others.
It’s entirely possible to care about refugees and the homeless, support fair immigration policies while championing quality education, and fight for veterans’ rights alongside women’s rights. Individuals can contribute to a food bank, a women’s shelter, and a global humanitarian organization. It may seem surprising, but it’s true.
Moreover, caring about people in different parts of the world doesn’t diminish our compassion for those in our own communities. It’s entirely plausible to juggle parenting responsibilities while being deeply invested in social issues such as intersectional feminism and immigration reform. Moms are capable of embracing multiple facets of life, and that’s truly remarkable.
Now is not the time for half-hearted conversations. We must engage in difficult discussions, educate ourselves, financially support equality-focused causes, and advocate tirelessly. We need to consistently demonstrate that these issues matter.
However, acknowledging one cause doesn’t mean we disregard others. The love we have for our children is equal, but sometimes one child’s challenges demand more immediate attention. Advocating for a child’s IEP doesn’t imply we neglect another’s food allergies, just as fighting for gender equality doesn’t mean we lack concern for veterans or the homeless. This duality is a reality in parenting, yet it seems harder for some to grasp in the realm of social justice.
It’s not a matter of choosing sides; highlighting one issue doesn’t imply indifference towards another. Let’s stop diminishing the important work of others simply because their focus differs from ours. The inability to appreciate the multifaceted nature of humanity says more about the critic’s heart than the person they are targeting.

In summary, compassion is not limited to a singular issue. We can advocate for multiple causes simultaneously, understanding that our focus on one does not diminish our care for others. Embracing this multifaceted approach is crucial in both parenting and activism.
