Young Ava Johnston, just seven years old, didn’t want to miss out on her school’s “crazy hair day.” However, she faced a unique challenge: Ava has alopecia, an autoimmune condition that has resulted in her losing all her hair over the past few months.
While some parents might have opted to style a wig for the occasion, Ava’s mom, Sarah Johnston, took creativity to another level. She ventured into the craft aisle and fashioned a one-of-a-kind, dazzling look that surely turned heads throughout the school. “It’s crazy ‘head’ day today! I must say she looks absolutely stunning!” Sarah shared on her Instagram, posting photos of her daughter’s sparkling design.
Sarah has been chronicling Ava’s journey with alopecia since her diagnosis earlier this year. “There’s no cure or medication available,” she noted in an Instagram post alongside an image of Ava beaming with joy. “Steroid pills are an option, but they don’t guarantee results, and once stopped, the hair falls out again. Steroid injections into the scalp are another alternative, but we’re not comfortable with those options. For now, we’re embracing her fabulous new look.”
She added, “Ava remains her beautiful, spirited, intelligent, and kind self. I’m excited to explore this with her and have fun trying new things. This girl is fierce and braver than I ever expected. I love her to bits.”
Through it all, Ava has maintained a positive outlook, confidently rocking headscarves, wigs, and even her bald head. “You have to teach your kids that life isn’t always fair; they must learn to adapt and make it their own,” Sarah told a local news outlet. “Whatever challenges you face, even if it’s alopecia, stay confident, be yourself, and remember, bald is beautiful.”
Ava loved her bejeweled hairstyle so much that she plans to recreate it with new designs in the future. She hopes to inspire other children dealing with hair loss, and she’s already inspired us!
