This Year’s White House Easter Egg Roll Is a Complete Letdown
The lineup is disappointingly sparse.
With the White House Easter Egg Roll—an event steeped in 138 years of tradition—just around the corner, it appears that planning has been minimal at best.
“This is the most prominent event that occurs at the White House annually, and both the administration and the First Lady are evaluated based on its execution,” said Linda Smith, who organized Easter events during the Clinton administration, in an interview with The New York Times.
Last year’s festivities featured a star-studded lineup, including Idina Menzel, the cast of Sesame Street, and various celebrities like Shaquille O’Neal and Shonda Rhimes, in addition to numerous professional athletes and beloved costume characters like Peppa Pig and the Cat in the Hat.
This year, however, the official lineup boasts just “a Sesame Street costumed character and other fun events.” Yes, you read that right—ONE Sesame Street character. The announcement also states, “Musical artists will perform on the South Lawn music stage throughout the day. Guests include the Martin Family Circus.” The most thrilling part of this year’s lineup? The mention of last year’s performers.
Clearly, this isn’t a shock; the First Lady typically oversees the event. Since she doesn’t reside there, perhaps the planning has fallen off the radar? A recent tweet from the official Easter Egg Roll account captures the sentiment perfectly.
“Our team has been diligently working to ensure this year’s event is a success,” said Katie Johnson, who just began her role as Mrs. Trump’s communications director, in an interview with The New York Times. “I trust that the success of this year’s Easter Egg Roll will be evident.” Her statement comes just two days into her new position.
Reports suggest that this year’s event appears to be hastily assembled, with estimates indicating it may draw only about 20,000 attendees—significantly fewer than last year’s 37,000—and will rely on just 200 volunteers, a mere fifth of the usual number. Someone needs to remind them to include a bunny!
