Teenager Criticized Over Dress Code ‘Violation’ During AP Exam Day
A mother is voicing her frustration after her daughter faced undue scrutiny over her attire at school. Emily, a 17-year-old junior at Westlake High School in San Antonio, Texas, was ready to tackle three challenging AP exams last Friday when she was unexpectedly confronted by school administrators regarding a supposed dress code breach. In tears, she called her mom, Lisa Carter, for support.
“I don’t see how this is a dress code violation,” Carter posted on social media, alongside a picture of Emily in the dress that administrators deemed unacceptable. “She’s 5’9”. It’s tough to find anything longer.” To us, the outfit looked perfectly appropriate.
School officials insisted that Carter needed to bring a different outfit for her daughter. Although she rushed to the school, she didn’t have a change of clothes ready, not wanting to disrupt Emily during her exams. The pressure of taking AP exams is already high, and dealing with an overly strict administrator about clothing only adds to the stress.
Carter took measurements of the dress beforehand and discovered it complied with the school’s dress code, which requires skirts and dresses to be no more than four inches above the knee. When she explained this to principal Dr. Mark Thompson, he dismissed her concerns, stating that the judgment of the administrator was what mattered.
This approach raises questions about adherence to established rules. Administrators shouldn’t have the power to disregard guidelines without valid reasons. Carter pointed out that the principal seemed more concerned about potential inappropriate photos being taken of Emily rather than addressing the situation appropriately. “She’s going to be climbing stairs in college—this seems ridiculous,” Carter commented.
Adding insult to injury, Dr. Thompson reportedly laughed when Carter expressed her daughter’s distress over being singled out. “I told him that was a very sexist thing to say,” Carter remarked.
Despite the disruption, Emily was able to complete her exams after one of her teachers intervened when the principal attempted to remove her from her Latin test. The anxiety of knowing she had to speak with him impacted her focus. “Just knowing she needed to talk to him messed with her concentration,” Carter shared.
Although Emily managed to finish her tests, the entire ordeal left a negative impression on both her and her mother. “They shamed my daughter,” Carter said, noting that Emily had worn the same dress previously without issue. “She was confused about why it was a problem this time.”
Carter expressed her concerns about the school’s priorities, highlighting that her daughter is a top student and class president, actively involved in fundraising for school events. “Apparently, the length of her skirt is more important than her education,” she lamented.
The school issued a statement claiming the situation was handled consistently with other dress code issues. “The student was not removed from class during a test,” said spokesperson Tom Harris. “We have met with the student and her parents to discuss the matter and it has been resolved.”

In summary, the incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding dress codes in schools and their enforcement, particularly when they seem to overshadow the educational experiences of students.
