Navigating the Gynecologist: The Awkward Realities for Women

Being a woman comes with its unique set of challenges that men often can’t fathom. Our bodies sometimes feel like foreign entities, scrutinized by strangers, examined by healthcare professionals, and subjected to the whims of our children. If we choose to embark on the journey of motherhood, we quickly learn to set aside any modesty we might have had, or risk extreme embarrassment during those routine gynecological visits.

During pregnancy, we find ourselves in an endless cycle of urine tests, internal examinations, and blood draws, while the blood pressure cuff feels like it’s permanently attached to us. It should come with a warning label: “Enjoy this moment of privacy because it might be your last!”

Living in a woman’s body is an incredible experience, albeit one that requires constant maintenance. We begin menstruating around age 12, and soon after, it’s time for our first visit to the gynecologist to ensure everything is functioning properly.

Women come to accept the oddity of discussing our sexual histories with a healthcare provider, who might as well be a stranger at a bizarre dinner party where we’re the only ones without pants. We learn to laugh about our bodily functions while undergoing examinations and inspections that would make anyone else squirm.

We might even find ourselves discussing the latest episode of a popular show while having our breasts examined for lumps. Surprised by the latest twist in a beloved series, we find ourselves feeling oddly at ease in such vulnerable positions. Sometimes, we are even offered a mirror to see our own anatomy, an experience that can be both enlightening and surreal.

Many of us have been poked, prodded, and examined by more people than we can count. This is why I can confidently stroll into a waxing salon and say, “Go ahead, do your thing!” without a hint of embarrassment. The gynecologist’s office has prepared me for this. After two children, I feel so liberated that I could probably walk down the street completely nude and feel little discomfort.

Meanwhile, my partner, Ben, struggles to muster the courage for an annual flu shot, let alone face the prospect of having to bare it all in front of a room full of people.
