I never imagined that dancing would become a post-election ritual, but it just sort of unfolded. There’s only so much news you can absorb, outrage you can express, and disappointment you can carry in a single day before you crave a little joy.
I’m not the most hopeful person out there. I don’t actively seek happiness in every corner. In fact, I often give a sarcastic salute to overly cheerful stores that preach positivity just to annoy me on a Wednesday. I prefer to keep my expectations low so that I can be pleasantly surprised by average outcomes. But one thing I do love is dancing—even if it’s not pretty!
When I was ten, I performed a lip-sync routine to Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” in front of my classmates, executing cartwheels in a head-to-toe black outfit with an unfortunate perm and oversized red glasses. It was a highlight of my childhood, and I’ve been searching for that exhilarating feeling ever since, even though I’m now 35 and still relatively unknown.
In light of my dance history and the current chaotic climate, I feel an irresistible urge to shake it off. When I express my desire to dance to friends, I’m only half-joking—I want to break out the Cabbage Patch and the Hammer, while completely avoiding the dab and any coordinated line dances. The Cupid Shuffle feels like a math problem for my feet, and I didn’t spend years avoiding math in college to let my awkwardness spill onto the dance floor.
After the election, I found myself picking up the pieces and trying to regain some semblance of joy. So, I turned on the music and created my nightly dance sessions, which I call The ResistDANCE.
Think about it: Can you really feel angry while grooving to ‘90s ska? Or when Sisqó sings about thongs? Doesn’t your spirit just lift at the first notes of anything by the Spice Girls? In my home, it’s like Richard Simmons’ workout hour around 7 PM, where I sweat to whatever feels uplifting that night.
