Empowerment at Every Age
Dress-up is a beloved activity for many three-year-olds. However, when little Mia Thompson dons her costumes, she’s not pretending to be a fairy princess. With her mother’s creativity, she recreates iconic images of strong female figures, proving to be just as inspiring for us as they are for her.
Mia’s outfits are curated and captured by her mother, Lisa Thompson. Lisa shares Mia’s looks on Instagram, where they have gained a following of over 41,000 thanks to the hashtag #MiasStyleJourney. In a piece for Bored Panda, Lisa shared that the idea for Mia to embody powerful women started when Mia’s grandmother, affectionately known as Nonnie, was diagnosed with cancer. “When Nonnie’s hair began to fall out, Mia was worried, and I wanted to help ease our minds,” Lisa explains. “I aimed to show both of us that women are resilient fighters! We chose prominent and courageous women to teach Mia about their strength.”
Who needs a crown when you can dress like Michelle Obama?
Lisa and Mia dedicated nearly a year to this project—the duration of Nonnie’s treatment, which included six rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. For every influential woman they recreated, Lisa took the opportunity to teach Mia about her role model. Through it all, Lisa was committed to ensuring that Mia stayed true to her own identity. “I encourage her to be whoever she wants to be,” she says. “To me, she is remarkable.”
The initial plan was to compile a photobook of Mia’s looks to present to Nonnie once her treatment concluded. Not only did it uplift Nonnie’s spirits, but it also provided both Mia and Lisa with a way to cope during a challenging time. “This project has been a blessing for both Mia and me,” Lisa reflects. “And showing my mom the final product—priceless. Every moment spent planning, styling, shooting, and editing was absolutely worth it.”
The best part? Nonnie is now cancer-free. Naturally, Mia had to embody her personal hero for one of her recreated looks.
What began as a means to navigate a tough cancer diagnosis evolved into something much greater for this mother-daughter duo. Lisa notes that the experience has been just as enlightening for her as it has been for Mia. “This project has probably taught me just as much or more than it has taught my daughter,” she says. “I want Mia to look back and know that women are just as strong as men.”
Lisa hopes that in the future, women will be recognized for their strength and power, similar to the icons her daughter portrays. “Honestly, I hope that by the time she’s old enough to truly understand the strength she represents, women won’t be viewed as fragile or delicate anymore. I want Mia to look back at this and feel proud of who she is and who she will become.”
