The Battle Against Car Naps: A Parent’s Struggle

Ah, the dreaded car nap. It’s the bane of my existence. Just a few minutes of shut-eye can throw my entire day—and sometimes the next one—into disarray. While some car naps are unavoidable, like during long road trips when my little one’s nap time clashes with travel, I will do just about anything to prevent them from happening, especially when we’re close to home.

My child sleeps best in his own bed, experiencing deeper and more restorative rest. This is essential for our daily rhythm. We all know the chaos that ensues when a toddler misses their nap or has to settle for a poor substitute nap. It’s a recipe for disaster. I guard my child’s nap time like it’s a treasure, scheduling our days around it. He’s always been a good sleeper, often asking to go “night night.” Our family functions much better with his nap routine intact.

That said, I typically avoid long car trips within an hour of his nap time. However, when those situations arise, I employ a series of tactics to keep him awake. Car naps are no joke and should be taken seriously.

Stage 1

I catch sight of the first signs of drowsiness in the rear-view mirror: yawning and eye rubbing. Recognizing the looming threat, I dive into lively conversation. I need to keep him engaged.
“Did you enjoy your day? What was the highlight? How about that little boy at the park who kept picking his nose? What’s your favorite color?”

Stage 2

When mild chatter no longer holds his interest, I turn to technology. I fire up an animated movie in the minivan or hand him my phone, showcasing family videos and photos from earlier adventures.
“Look at this picture of the giraffe we saw at the zoo! Remember the Easter egg hunt? Here’s a video!”

Stage 3

His eyelids start to droop, and I crank up the excitement. My voice goes into overdrive.
“WOW! LOOK AT THAT TREE! IT’S SO GREEN AND TALL! AND THAT CAR HAS FOUR WHEELS! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?”

Stage 4

At this point, I can see his focus slipping away. I rummage through my bag for candy or toys to bring him back to reality. If that fails, I try rolling the windows up and down, hoping the fresh air will revive him. I wonder what other drivers think as they see me in this frantic battle against sleep.

Stage 5

This is the moment of truth. Desperate times call for desperate measures. If my partner is driving, I’m right by my son’s side, giving kisses, making funny noises, and singing loudly. If I’m behind the wheel, I’m reaching back to tickle his feet, hold his hand, and blast music at full volume.

If I exhaust all these efforts and he still falls asleep, I’m left with no choice but to drive in circles until he wakes up. Typically, that nap lasts about thirty minutes, far shorter than the hour and a half he usually gets at home. The aftermath? An irritable toddler who’s ready to meltdown. If I’m lucky, an early bedtime might reset the chaos, but if not, we’re in for a tough day ahead. Car naps, I tell you!
