If only birthday parties could earn awards for creativity! Themed birthday celebrations have become quite the trend these days. From Mickey Mouse Clubhouse treats to PJ Masks costumes, and even Avenger-themed goodies – it seems everything has been done (at least according to Pinterest). If you don’t put your heart into planning a themed birthday party, you might just find yourself in trouble with your fellow parents. While organizing these events can be a lot of work, they can also be incredibly enjoyable. A prime example of this is Mia Thompson and her Broadway-enthusiast daughter, Lily.
When Lily initially hoped to attend a live performance of Hamilton with her friends, the idea turned out to be unrealistic (gotta love her ambition). However, her mom decided to create a fantastic alternative: a Hamilton-themed celebration right in New York City. And it was nothing short of spectacular.
Mia (aka the ultimate mom) dedicated a month to organizing the perfect decorations and even crafted some herself. She shared with The Huffington Post that the kids joined in a Hamilton scavenger hunt, donned traditional colonial outfits, and even belted out Hamilton karaoke. No one was missing out on the chance to enjoy an unforgettable birthday bash (catch the pun?).
The attention to detail is evident in these fantastic photos, courtesy of Lily’s dad, Mark Thompson of Thompson Photography. The party featured playbills, color-coordinated balloons, a stunning cake, delicious cupcakes, and favor bags filled with lyrics from the musical along with mini U.S. Constitutions. Yes, mini constitutions! The lucky kids also took home paper dolls of the show’s main characters, a notepad, and an American flag pen to channel their inner Alexander Hamilton as they “wrote like they were running out of time.”
Mia explained that the story behind Hamilton resonates deeply with Lily, as it connects to her family’s history. “She feels a bond with the story of an immigrant from the Caribbean,” Mia noted. “Both her dad and grandmother hail from there, so she instantly related to the narrative.” (For those curious, Alexander Hamilton was indeed a Caribbean immigrant.) Additionally, Lily is a true New Yorker who loves that the story highlights “the greatest city in the world,” as her mom mentioned.
It’s heartening to see musical theater capture the imaginations of young children, showcasing the importance of the arts and creativity in their lives, especially as artistic programs face budget cuts nationwide. I was just 10 when I first experienced a musical, and it profoundly influenced my creativity, providing me with a meaningful outlet. I wish I could give Lily (and her amazing parents) a high-five.
“Sure, it would have been simpler to throw a ‘My Little Pony’ or princess party, but this challenge was totally worth it because my daughter is ‘Satisfied,’” Mia remarked.
As a cherry on top, the party received a shout-out from Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, the creator of Hamilton: “From one young, scrappy, and hungry fan to another.”
