To ease this stress and provide a moment of joy, a hospital in North Carolina has introduced a delightful tradition: graduation ceremonies for babies leaving the NICU.
Nurse Emily Thompson at Carolina Regional Medical Center in Gastonia conceived the charming idea to celebrate these significant milestones. Regardless of whether a baby’s NICU stay is brief or extended, the achievement of going home is worthy of celebration.
“As a NICU nurse, I form close bonds with both the infants and their families,” Emily shared with our team. “Some babies remain in the NICU for weeks, sometimes months, so it’s easy to develop heartfelt connections.”
The inspiration for these ceremonies came about six months ago when the parents of a baby born at 28 weeks brought in a onesie that read “NICU GRAD” to celebrate their child’s discharge. Emily was inspired and wanted to enhance the day even further by crafting a small graduation cap out of construction paper.
“When the baby was discharged, we gathered the staff to sing and dance, presenting the cap to the baby. The joy on the parents’ faces confirmed that we needed to continue this for other families,” she recounted.
Now, the caps have evolved from simple paper to colorful foam, emblazoned with the phrase, “X days behind me, a whole lifetime in front of me,” reflecting the number of days spent in the NICU.
To commemorate this momentous occasion, Emily partnered with Bella Baby Photography, a company that specializes in hospital photography. “These photos are complimentary for families because the NICU experience often lacks the traditional postpartum moments. They deserve this celebration,” said Lauren Naldzin, Director of Operations for Bella Baby Photography.
Bringing a baby home after a NICU stay is packed with emotions—joy mixed with anxiety, especially when families are navigating medical equipment and care routines. The graduation photos serve as cherished keepsakes, capturing the journey and instilling hope for the future.
“These images help families reflect on their journey and celebrate their new chapter,” Lauren added. “They also serve as a reminder that their stay in the NICU is temporary and that they are on their way to normalcy.”
Additionally, the hospital plans to create a wall showcasing NICU graduate photos, inspiring new families entering the NICU. This initiative aims to provide hope and reassurance to parents embarking on their own journeys.
As these babies graduate, they take their first steps toward a bright future, filled with promise and love.
