Celebrating Father’s Day Amidst Change

As Father’s Day approaches, this year is set to be a unique experience for me and my family. After parting ways with my husband earlier this year, many of our cherished family traditions have shifted. Our once-favorite Friday night pizza and relaxing Sundays have given way to dining out, coordinating the kids’ schedules, and navigating the emotional landscape of our new reality.

However, some traditions remain steadfast. We still enjoy our Saturday lunches at our go-to burger place, where I inevitably overindulge and then complain about it, much to my ex’s amusement. He often shakes his head, questioning why I put myself through it, yet he never hesitates to join me for ice cream afterward—even if I’ve just unbuttoned my pants in a crowded eatery. He knows how stubborn I can be when it comes to dessert.

We continue to go to the movies as a family when there’s a film the kids are excited to see. I often sneak candy and drinks into my purse from the dollar store while he pays for our tickets, and I make a quick detour to the restroom to avoid the front desk. We’ve become quite the team, and these moments are something we can all rely on, bringing us joy even amidst the changes.

Honoring a Wonderful Father

One thing that will not change is my commitment to honoring my children’s father on Father’s Day. I do this not only because he ensured I had a lovely Mother’s Day with delightful skincare gifts and a special meal, but because it’s simply the right thing to do. He is their father—the only one they will ever have—and fortunately for them, he is a wonderful dad. He deserves recognition for his role in their lives.

Despite our marriage coming to an end, his dedication as a father remains strong. He was present for each of our children’s births, supporting me through every moment, even when I was at my most dramatic. I’ve watched him fall in love with each of our children, holding them close, changing diapers, and soothing them to sleep. He stepped in countless times when I felt overwhelmed, reassuring me that I needed to rest while he managed the late-night feedings.

He is an exceptional father, and he deserves a day dedicated to appreciating him. While we may not be the starry-eyed couple we once were, the memories we’ve created over two decades—filled with celebrations, house hunting, and shared struggles—remain invaluable.

Looking Ahead

I want him to be celebrated on Father’s Day this year and for many years to come, just as I did when we were together. That’s my plan.
