Let’s get straight to the point: I’m officially done with the daily cycle of washing dishes. It’s an exhausting, unending task that I no longer feel inclined to repeat after every meal or even snack. Picture me as Sisyphus, endlessly pushing that rock; as soon as I finish one load, another pile magically appears, and sometimes it’s even worse.
Typically, I find dirty dishes strewn across the kitchen table, piling up on the counter, or precariously balanced on the windowsill behind the couch where you left them after devouring that buttery popcorn while binge-watching your favorite shows. And now, thanks to that, we have ants invading our space!
I know I’m great at washing everything from plates and pots to your cherished handmade mugs adorned with your little handprints. You might admire my dishwashing finesse—how I expertly switch between the soft and scrubby sides of the sponge based on the grime’s severity, how much soap to use, and my efficient water usage. But let’s be real; that doesn’t mean you get out of doing your share.
I’m prepared to overlook your beginner efforts if you could just step up and do the dishes without the usual eye rolls or half-hearted excuses. I’m not doing you any favors by constantly cleaning up after you, especially since all of you are perfectly capable of handling this now. One of you is even 15 and tackling complex math about exoplanets! Surely, you can manage to clear the dinner table and sort out what needs washing.
And to you, my delightful middle school daughter, I know juggling social plans is exhausting, but do not try to tell me you’re “too tired” to help. You don’t know tired until you’ve experienced sleepless nights filled with hot flashes. If anyone deserves a break, it’s me!
Even you, my little 5-year-old, can manage to bring your plate to the sink, give it a rinse, and pop it in the dishwasher. What’s that? You can’t reach the faucet? Drag that old Mickey Mouse step stool over, just like you do to reach my hidden chocolate stash.
I realize I have high standards, and I can’t stand dishes lingering too long. But when I say “do the dishes now,” it doesn’t mean after your social media antics or the latest episode of whatever you’re watching. To me, “now” means immediately, not whenever you get around to it!
You love to test my patience, waiting until I finally gather the abandoned cups and greasy pans to add to the overflowing sink. But here’s the new me: I’m ready to let go of my cleaning compulsion so you can feel the pride of taking care of your own dishes.
Just remember, I’m doing this for your growth, so don’t ever say I didn’t help you out. Oh, and here’s my wine glass—make sure to use extra soap on that; the lip gloss can be a challenge to remove!
