While out shopping with my daughter recently, she gravitated toward the acid wash denim, which instantly transported me back to my fifth-grade days. I found myself yearning for a pair of those jeans again, but I hesitated—could a woman in her 40s like me really rock that look? I’ve experienced these trends before, after all, but that was three decades ago. They say if you’ve seen a trend make a comeback, it’s best to steer clear.

Yet, the more I pondered, the more I recognized how the fabulousness of the ’80s can indeed offer a plethora of style options for women like us. Here are some trends worth embracing:

High-Waisted Jeans

These are an absolute game changer. If you haven’t tried a pair yet, you simply must! It feels amazing to be all tucked in, reminiscent of a denim girdle. I proudly own three pairs, and they do wonders for banishing that muffin top.

High Ponytail

This is my ultimate go-to hairstyle—old school and new school all rolled into one. It minimizes the need for hair brushing, and if styled tightly, it can double as a mini facelift. Talk about a win-win!

Velcro Sneakers

When I first spotted those bright white Velcro sneakers making a comeback on the runway, I was incredulous. How could such a simple design become trendy again? Then it hit me: purchasing a pair would check shoe-tying off my to-do list. Simplifying life is key, right?

Block Heels

I remember sporting block heels during my younger years, and they’re just as practical now. Sometimes, women my age want to go out, enjoy a drink, and look nice too. With these sturdy heels, you can sip your wine without the worry of twisting an ankle.

Acid Wash Denim

Let’s be real—this trend is a lifesaver for those of us who occasionally mix up our laundry. If your new jeans accidentally get bleached, no problem! You’re right on trend.

Shoulder Pads

Shoulder pads are not just for style; they can help create the illusion of a slimmer midsection. Plus, they can be repurposed in a pinch, like as tissues or even a maxi pad if needed. You’re welcome!

Anything Neon

I fondly recall wearing neon socks and jelly bracelets while sitting at baseball games with my sisters. The nostalgia alone makes it worthwhile to add a pop of neon to your wardrobe. Just avoid the neon lipstick—it might not be the best choice.

So, I’m fully on board with embracing this delightful revival of ’80s fashion. Who cares if it’s a second time around? Plus, my daughter and I are nearing the point where we can share clothing and shoes—what a fantastic opportunity!
