Growing up in the vibrant ’80s, I experienced a whirlwind of iconic styles, unforgettable music, and cheesy movies that shaped my teenage years. I vividly remember the excitement of MTV’s launch in August 1981, where I could watch music videos around the clock. It was the perfect window into every fashion trend, from side ponytails to jelly shoes and parachute pants.
Looking back, some trends from that decade seem utterly bizarre today, while others still hold a special place in my heart and I wish they would make a comeback. Here’s my take on the hits and misses of ’80s fashion:
-
Long Hair for Men is a Yes!
I appreciate my partner’s short hairstyle, but I can’t help but miss the long hair of icons like Jake Matthews and Slash. There was something undeniably cool about those flowing locks. -
Rat Tails and Mullets? No Thanks!
I once sported a mullet, though it was referred to as a “bi-level” cut back then, inspired by a certain pop star. Today, the sight of a mullet or a rat tail makes me cringe and reach for the scissors. -
Pegged Pants Were a Yes!
As a teenager, I made sure to roll my jeans just right before heading to school. Pegged pants were the epitome of cool, and I still think they deserve a revival. -
Tracksuits? Absolutely Not!
These were a staple in the ’80s, particularly among moms, but I never liked them then and I still don’t. Give me yoga pants any day! -
Bomber Jackets – Yes, Please!
There’s something timeless about bomber jackets. I always wanted one, and I still think they can add a touch of cool to any outfit. -
Shoulder Pads? A Big No!
Originally intended to give women a more powerful silhouette, shoulder pads invaded every piece of clothing. I tolerated them for a bit but eventually started removing them. Now that they’re resurfacing, I say let’s leave them in the past! -
Spiral Perms Were Fantastic!
Before college, I would get the occasional perm to control my waves. By the end of the decade, spiral perms became all the rage. I still think those curls were fabulous and would love to see them come back. -
Side Ponytails? No Way!
Side ponytails were cute on kids but not on adults. I learned this the hard way when my niece insisted I wear one, and it was a sight to behold! -
Penny Loafers are Forever!
I practically lived in penny loafers during my teenage years. They’re a classic style that should never go out of fashion. -
Puffy Shirts? Absolutely Not!
Puffy, lacy shirts were trendy, especially for men, but they were not flattering on anyone else. I’m grateful that this trend has faded into oblivion.
These are just a few of the unforgettable trends that defined the ’80s. What styles did you love or loathe? Summary:
The ’80s were a mixed bag of fashion trends, with some styles like long hair for men, pegged pants, and bomber jackets still holding appeal, while others, such as mullets, shoulder pads, and tracksuits, deserve to stay in the past. As we reminisce about those years, it’s clear that the decade left an indelible mark on style.
