11 Must-Have Products in My Daily Grooming Routine (A Response to Jenna Collins)

Today, my fellow editor Jenna Collins shared her top 10 beauty essentials, and as a guy, it got me thinking about my own daily grooming routine. Inspired, I decided to create my own list—only I had to one-up her and include 11 items. Here’s what makes the cut.

  1. Head and Shoulders
I can’t say for sure if I’d have dandruff without my trusty dandruff shampoo, but I’m not about to find out. Maybe we could ask someone else, like Kyle Thompson, to take that risk.
  2. Irish Spring Soap
My journey with Irish Spring started in my early 20s when I dated my wife. After years apart, when we got back together and married, she picked up this soap for me, remembering it as my favorite. Now, it’s a part of my daily routine once again.
  3. Nail Clipper
Two grooming tasks make me uneasy if neglected: getting a haircut and clipping my nails. Unfortunately, I’ve lost countless nail clippers; luckily, I can snag a new one for just 99 cents at CVS, especially the ones conveniently displayed at the checkout.
  4. Salicylic Acid
I used to think acne would be a thing of the past by my 40s, but here we are. Thankfully, this over-the-counter wonder keeps breakouts at bay, and I prefer the store brand.
  5. My Hands
Here’s a fun tidbit: every new barber I visit always comments on my thick, fast-growing hair. What can I say? I’ve learned to spend just 15 seconds in the morning taming it with my hands rather than fussing with combs or brushes.
  6. Budget Razors
I opt for the inexpensive disposable razors. This means I toss them after a few uses, which I believe is more economical than buying pricier ones that I’d end up tossing just the same. Switching to a straight razor is on my mind, but I haven’t made the leap yet.
  7. $4 Shower Mirror
A fog-free mirror is vital for my shower shaving routine. This inexpensive suction cup mirror does the trick perfectly.
  8. Brut (sometimes Old Spice)
If you want to gauge how old-school a guy is, just check his deodorant. I’ve been loyal to Brut since my high school days, and that’s a while ago now!
  9. Old Spice All-in-One
On occasion, especially while traveling, I’ll indulge in this versatile product that serves as both a body wash and shampoo. Who knows—it might even double as a dessert topping!
  10. Hair Styling Product
I can never remember the name of this product, which is probably why I end up grabbing a different brand each time. With thick hair, I need something to keep it looking somewhat presentable. I suspect it contains a mix of glue and who knows what else!
  11. Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer
Aging comes with unwelcome surprises, like increased hair growth in undesirable places. This handy trimmer, along with a stash of AAA batteries, has become essential.
