5 ’90s Fashion Trends Making a Comeback

I remember my mom reminiscing about her beloved miniskirts and wide-legged jeans, wishing she had kept them for the future. It was amusing to see her reaction when I began sporting modern takes on those styles from her heyday. Little did I know that many of the trends from my own youth—now seemingly a distant memory—would also resurface. As I shop for fall attire, I’m encountering an array of nostalgic styles that I never thought would be back in vogue. Here are five retro trends that have reemerged:

1. Flannel Shirts

Who else remembers those oversized flannel shirts from college? You either snagged a large one to drape over yourself or borrowed one from your boyfriend. Well, flannel is back in style! Stores are stocked with these shirts, although the current versions are more tailored and fitted, so we can look like ourselves rather than our college sweethearts.

2. Hammer Pants

I suspected that those lightweight, baggy parachute pants gathering at the ankle were always kind of cool, even when they first hit the scene in the early ’90s. Today, I own a few pairs of Hammer pants, and they’re incredibly comfy! I wear them to yoga and then to my kids’ soccer games. It seems like other moms have embraced them too. Some even opt for fancier versions for nights out. Is it Hammer Time again?

3. Ponchos

As a child, I had a red itchy poncho with a Fair Isle pattern that I wore until it was practically a crop top (seriously, let’s hope crop tops don’t come back). Fast forward to now, and ponchos are back in action! They’re perfect for crisp fall days, and I’ve spotted some with updated Fair Isle patterns that are far more stylish. I pair mine with skinny jeans or leggings, which are also enjoying a revival (more on that soon).

4. Leggings and Leg Warmers

Remember rocking leggings, sometimes with stirrups, and those vibrant leg warmers? I had a standout pair of turquoise Esprit leggings with hot pink leg warmers that I wore everywhere, even if I wasn’t warming up for a dance routine. Today’s women continue to sport leggings, keeping their legs cozy all day, whether they’re planning to dance like Jennifer Beals or simply enjoying comfort. Flashdance is timeless, right?

5. Maxi Skirts

Laura Ashley prairie skirts were a staple of my high school wardrobe, often paired with lace tights and ballet flats. I may have been a bit misguided in my fashion choices then, but it turns out I was ahead of the curve because long flowy skirts—now called maxi skirts—are back in fashion. I wore them often this past summer and saw many stylish women doing the same. They’re easy to wear and look fantastic with a cute pair of flip-flops or ballet flats peeking out from under the hem.

Some might say that if you wore a style once, you’re too old to don it again when it returns. I wholeheartedly disagree! However, if bodysuits, tapered jeans, or cowboy boots make a comeback, I might just bow out. I can’t go there!
