As a parent, can you imagine the horror of seeing your 14-year-old daughter in a bathing suit being brutally thrown to the ground by a police officer while she sobs, simply for trying to speak? How could anyone process such an image without overwhelming feelings of anger and fear?
Recently, a pool party in McKinney, Texas, highlighted the troubling perceptions some police officers have towards black children, treating them as suspects despite their innocence. Shocking footage captured by onlookers displayed one officer intimidating a group of kids, igniting outrage across the nation.
McKinney, a suburb of Dallas, is predominantly white, with only 10% of its population being black. It was even recognized by Money magazine in 2014 as one of the best places to live in America. Last week, a local resident, 19-year-old Lisa Jordan, organized a pool party, promoting it as a public event on social media with free entry. Reports indicate around 70 teenagers attended the gathering, most of whom lived in the area.
Around 7:15 p.m. on Friday, police responded to reports of a fight occurring near the Craig Ranch Community North Pool. According to BuzzFeed News, tensions escalated after some adults made racist remarks, instructing the black teens to “return to Section 8 housing.” When officers arrived, one officer’s aggressive response stood out; he brandished his gun and began to round up the children. The situation escalated further when he tackled a 14-year-old girl in a bikini, pinning her down while she called out for her mother.
A white teenager, Mark Thompson, who filmed the incident, recounted to BuzzFeed, “Everyone who was being thrown down was black, Hispanic, or Arab. The cop didn’t even acknowledge me; it felt like I was invisible.” The police officer proceeded to handcuff and detain teens who identified themselves as mere bystanders.
The imagery of officers pointing guns at a group of teenagers and a girl being slammed to the ground is jarring, but the underlying assumption of guilt based solely on skin color is even more disturbing. The officers’ approach, as evidenced by the unedited video footage, is deeply unsettling.
While 70 teens is a considerable number, one can only wonder how the situation would have unfolded if the organizer had been white and the attendees primarily white too. This incident starkly illustrates the profound impact of systemic racism—some may dismiss it as typical teenage misbehavior, while others will recognize the bias at play.
As a society, we should expect law enforcement to act as peacekeepers, rather than behaving like members of a SWAT team. By the time officers arrived, the teens were already attempting to leave. What justified the use of guns and the detainment of these young individuals? If you can watch a police officer slam a teenage girl to the ground and not deem it excessive force, it raises serious questions about our values.
Following the incident, the officer involved has been placed on leave. McKinney Mayor James Carter expressed his concern, stating, “We expect our police department and other agencies to act professionally and exercise appropriate restraint relative to the situation.”
No parent should have to witness such treatment of their children. Yes, police should respond to reports of a potential fight with caution, but there is no justification for drawing weapons on a group of teenagers simply trying to leave a pool party.

In summary, the incident in McKinney, Texas, raises critical questions about race, policing, and how we treat our youth. No child should be subjected to such treatment, and we must advocate for change to ensure safety and dignity for all.
