Just yesterday, I found myself in the kitchen, whipping up peanut butter and jelly sandwiches yet again. As I was hastily spreading jelly onto three slices of bread, my partner, Alex, chimed in from behind me, “Those sandwiches don’t seem to be made with much love.”
“Love?” I scoffed. “Not even a little.”
Maybe it’s because my kids have been eating the same lunches day in and day out for what feels like an eternity. Or perhaps it’s the fact that any time I try to introduce something new, I end up with an empty lunch box and two hungry kids coming home. Maybe I’m just running on fumes in the mornings when I’m preparing their meals. Honestly, I would probably prefer to savor their PB&J instead of my Greek yogurt. Then there’s the overwhelming pile of laundry that seems to multiply by the day and a kitchen sink overflowing with dirty dishes. Don’t forget that I shower my children with love in countless other ways. It could be one or all of these factors.
But love? That’s not the secret ingredient in their lunch boxes.
These are the lunches crafted from necessity, not sentimentality. And I’m certain they taste just as good.
It’s refreshing to remember that love shines through in many forms, whether it’s a perfectly crafted lunch or the efforts we make every day. In summary, while my kids may not get the gourmet lunches they deserve, I know they are filled with the love of a busy parent doing their best.
