Things have been pretty quiet on the parenting front lately, which is a bit of a challenge for someone who writes a “mommy blog.” When your kids are behaving, you’re often left without much material to work with. So, instead of sharing tales about my well-behaved children, I’ve decided to delve into my own parenting blunders. Some of these memories took a bit of digging, mainly because A. they aren’t all fresh in my mind, B. I feel like I’ve lost a few brain cells with each child, and C. let’s just say I’ve enjoyed my fair share of wine along the way, which hasn’t helped my memory!
Let’s kick things off with my top parenting fails:
1. The Great Baby Swing Incident
It was a crisp winter day in 2002, and we were enjoying a lovely afternoon at my in-laws’ home. My daughter, Lily, who was just over a year old, was eager to try out the new toddler swing hung from an old oak tree. As I pushed her back and forth, I thought it would be fun to swing her in a circle, like a tire swing. What could go wrong, right? Well, to my horror, the swing tipped over, and there was Lily, screaming in pure terror as she dangled precariously. My first instinct? Yelling for help instead of simply catching her when she swung back around! Luckily, my husband and father-in-law were quick to save the day. Thankfully, she was unharmed, and now we can look back and laugh at the chaos.
2. That Time I Almost Offered My Son to a Horse
About six years ago, we found ourselves at a friend’s rural home, which was far from childproof. After a night of socializing, I woke up to find my son, Jake, missing. Panic set in as we searched everywhere. Finally, I spotted a glimmer of sunlight near the horse barn. To my shock, there was Jake, barefoot and in his pajamas, happily standing between the legs of a large quarter horse named Thunder, who was munching on his hair! In my effort to keep the kids safe from the pool, I had completely forgotten to lock the front door. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation, even as I frantically ran towards them.
3. The Birthday Mudslide Fiasco of 2011
Fast forward to a recent gathering in the country, where we decided to create an epic adventure involving an old plastic hydro slide, a beefed-up golf cart, and a tow rope. Things started off great—everyone was having fun—until my husband and the driver thought it would be hilarious to drive the kids through what they assumed was a shallow puddle. Spoiler alert: it was more like a small lake! The slide sank, and a tidal wave of mud soaked the girls, leaving them shrieking in horror. To top it off, it was one of their birthdays. Total epic fail!
Of course, we all experience the typical parenting mishaps—the kids misbehaving one minute, then coming down with a fever the next, or forgetting sunscreen at the pool. However, these moments stand out as particularly memorable blunders in my parenting journey. What’s wonderful about these experiences is that they often turn into cherished memories. Just saying, “This is the WORST birthday EVER!” sends my kids into fits of laughter, reminding me that laughter is the best medicine for the chaos of parenting.

Summary
Parenting is a journey filled with laughter, love, and unexpected mishaps. From swinging babies to mudslide disasters, these moments remind us that while parenting can be chaotic, it can also be a source of joy and humor. Embracing our mistakes helps us connect with our kids and create lasting memories.
