Why My Partner Seems to Favor Our Dog Over Me

Princess Diana once famously remarked, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” I can truly relate to that sentiment. However, instead of a former lover vying for attention, there’s a more innocent contender in my relationship—a dog who, despite having no hidden motives, has captured my partner’s heart.

With his soulful brown eyes and an unmistakable aroma that can only be described as unique, our dog is clearly the apple of my partner’s eye. It seems the feeling is mutual; my partner’s world revolves around our furry friend.

After a long day at work, my partner rushes home, not to greet me, but to snuggle with the dog first. Once he’s satisfied that the dog’s needs are met—usually with plenty of petting and treats—he might eventually turn his attention to me. It’s not that I’m expecting a royal welcome, but a simple inquiry about my day would be nice. While I’m not the type to lick his face in return, a refreshing drink would definitely hit the spot.

So, what are my options? Should I simply accept the situation? Transform into a drooling, shedding creature myself? Or perhaps team up with my furry rival for my partner’s affection?

The Family Dynamics

Oh yes, the family dynamics! It’s not just my partner who seems to be enamored with the dog; it feels like everyone in the household has placed him on a pedestal. No matter how many late-night accidents he has or how many socks he manages to ruin, the dog is treated like royalty. Meanwhile, my partner and I might squeeze in a date every other year, but long walks with the dog are a daily ritual.

As for the kids, let’s just say their culinary options have taken a backseat to our dog’s gourmet diet. While they might survive on basic meals, our four-legged friend enjoys only the best raw meat. He even gets pampered with what I’d call a “mud bath”—his version of a spa day.

I’ve contemplated having a heart-to-heart about who really holds the title of “favorite,” but that would feel so desperate. After all, we’re married, not in a love triangle with a canine. Yet, given that my partner and the dog have shared 14 years of companionship compared to our 10, it’s understandable that their bond is strong.

It’s not that I dislike the dog; in fact, he’s quite charming. He’s lovable and easygoing, albeit a bit neurotic when it comes to my partner. Their connection is so intense it could inspire a love song! Yet, I can’t help but look forward to the day when I no longer have to pluck black dog hair from the carpet—though I know the absence of our furry friend will leave a void that could only be filled by another playful companion.

Next time, I’ll choose the family addition!
