In my journey through life, I have been a guardian to over a thousand kids. They have come from all walks of life—some are Black, others are White; some are tall, while others are short; some have blue eyes, others are pierced, gay, autistic, humorous, dramatic, brilliant, dyslexic, talented, transgender, outgoing, artistic, athletic, and much more.

I’ve had the joy of watching them grow, from crafting their first sentences to standing tall in the face of adversity. I’ve been a source of comfort in their grief, embracing their sorrows as if they were my own. There were countless mornings when I rose before dawn and gazed at the moon, ensuring that I completed my daily tasks so they could take their next steps in life. I have challenged them to confront reality, pushing them to strive for their best selves.

Every day, my children throw me surprises. Each one has unique needs, distinct perspectives, and individual pains that require healing. It is a privilege to help them share their stories and discover their true potential, teaching them how to navigate a world that often tells them they are not enough. To me, they are always more than enough—capable of moving mountains and changing the world if that’s their desire. Sometimes, the weight of my hope for them feels like the only anchor amid the chaos and pain of life.

I have endured the relentless pressures of society, which often question my methods and intentions. I have faced the overwhelming tide that threatens to wash away the love and creativity I strive to instill in my children daily. I fight tirelessly to provide them with what they genuinely need, which cannot be dictated by external forces that aim to undermine my efforts. I strive for understanding and respect from those who do not share my experiences yet wish to influence my path.

I have devoted every moment of my day to improving my children’s lives. Countless hours and resources have been spent ensuring their needs are met, often at the cost of my own well-being. There have been nights I woke up at 3 AM, consumed with thoughts of their safety and happiness. Daily, I have given them my lunch, my heart, my laughter, and my tears.

I do this because every single one of them is mine. They are my children. And I? I am their mentor.

In summary, the journey of guiding and nurturing children is filled with challenges and rewards. Each child brings their unique story, and as a mentor, it is my honor to help them navigate their paths while believing in their limitless potential.
