Navigating the journey of parenting an emerging adult has always posed its challenges. With the rise of smartphones and social media, teaching kids essential life skills feels like climbing a steep hill. Forget about dishing out profound wisdom—simple survival skills have become a battle.
As my eldest daughter prepared to head off to college, I found myself wondering what pearls of wisdom she had absorbed over the years, especially when it came to laundry. I had my reasons for concern.
Just as I used to leave sweet notes in her lunch bag when she was little, I decided to send her some laundry reminders mixed with life lessons. I titled the email, “Do Your Laundry or You’ll End Up Alone,” right after her classes kicked off. Here’s what I shared:
- Do Your Laundry Regularly. Aim for once a week. Clean clothes are vital, especially your favorite jeans. When you need them, you want them fresh—and not battling the dilemma of wearing dirty favorites or ill-fitting alternatives. Trust me, self-confidence counts when chatting with that cute classmate!
- Handle Your Delicates with Care. Never use heat to dry them.
- Sort Your Colors. Keep darks and lights separate. Mixing a red shirt with whites will lead to disastrous results. Remember, life is like mixing paint; it’s essential to know how to blend the right colors for the desired effect.
- Check Those Pockets! Before washing, thoroughly inspect every pocket. You wouldn’t want a pen to ruin your load, nor would you want to wash away a cherished note. (Your mom probably didn’t mention this because it might have led to some embarrassing discoveries.)
- Lint is Out of Style. Get a lint brush or use tape to keep your clothes looking fresh.
- You Are Always on Display. When you roll out of bed into your sweats, consider how you present yourself to others. Personal hygiene matters, and it influences how people perceive you.
- Invest in a Confidence-Boosting Outfit. Have at least one ensemble that makes you feel fantastic and treat it with care.
- Avoid Crumpling Your Clothes. A shirt you’ve worn once shouldn’t be too wrinkled to wear again. Give it some love and hang it up!
- Beware of Clothing Sizes. Don’t rely solely on tags. Fit often changes after a wash.
- Cotton Shrinks. Always buy a bit larger than your actual size.
- Wool is Tricky. It shrinks when wet, so avoid washing it unless absolutely necessary.
- Passion Can Cloud Judgment. Enjoy life’s passions, but don’t let them lead to careless decisions.
- Outsmart the Sock Monster. This elusive creature loves to snack on lone socks. Use the buddy system: keep socks together in the wash by clipping them in pairs. Or, consider buying multiple identical pairs!
- Hang to Prevent Wrinkles. Folding can lead to unwanted creases. Non-slip hangers are a game-changer!
- Pick Up After Yourself. Even if you’re a bit messy, neat roommates make for better living situations.
