I have a little secret to share: I’m a social media addict.
I crave the approval of my family when they post about how adorable my kids are. I love it when long-lost friends on Facebook wonder why their kids haven’t mastered reading yet while my 4-year-old has. I can’t help but want to showcase my children’s radiant smiles, perfectly filtered for Instagram.
What’s wrong with me that I can’t savor a moment with my family without rushing to my phone to capture and share it? This obsession certainly takes away from the experience. While I may create a treasure trove of memories to show my children in the future, I worry that the only memories they’ll have of their childhood will involve a camera-happy mom urging them to smile for just one more picture. (“Come on, Jamie! I’ll give you FIVE cookies if you smile with your sister!”)
I also fret that my kids won’t remember a time before technology. I often fear that my youngest is viewing the world through the lens of over-the-top YouTube videos while my husband and I are glued to our screens. I’m starting to think we’re all missing out on precious family moments due to our attachment to our devices.
It’s Time for a Digital Detox
I’m proposing a full weekend without any cameras, phones, tablets, or computers. My family will go offline for 48 hours, allowing us to connect with one another genuinely. I wonder if my baby will even recognize me without that shiny black device in my hand. I can only imagine how much more challenging it will be to manage my kids without the distraction of my phone. Oh dear, what will I do during those long breastfeeding sessions? They can be so dull!
I have a feeling my family is pretty remarkable, and I’ve been missing out on their stories. My husband is likely an intriguing person with a lot to share. Remember when we started dating? Back in 2005, texting was minimal, so we must have genuinely conversed!
I bet my kids are equally fantastic, and I can discover this without relying on the Internet for validation. Plus, if something goes wrong, perhaps we can resolve it together without consulting Google, which would strengthen our family bond.
Once the weekend concludes, I plan to reassess my relationship with technology. Maybe we can strike a healthier balance. So, that’s my plan, and I’m committed to it. I’ll mark the weekend on the calendar, right after I check out this fantastic LivingSocial photo deal real quick…
