University of Real Life
Last week, I had to say goodbye to my summer sitter, and it tugged at my heartstrings. As I waved her off, I couldn’t help but mention that the lessons she learned with us far exceeded what she might acquire in four years of college. She chuckled, but I was completely serious. Isn’t higher education a bit overrated? To persuade her to stick around, I compiled a list of invaluable lessons she’s already mastered, proving there might be no need for her to attend college after all. Sounds reasonable, right?
Skills for Coexisting
After spending the summer with my kids, she’s become an expert at living harmoniously with others. Any roommate situation would feel like a vacation compared to that!
Health Management
She’s done an incredible job of warding off lice, colds, and flu. The same principle applies to unwanted situations: just keep unclean strangers at bay.
Culinary Expertise
She’s perfected the art of making the ultimate peanut butter and jelly sandwich, along with mastering mac and cheese and cereal. This covers the essentials of dorm room cooking.
Negotiation and Organization
Acting as the referee between my four- and six-year-olds, she’s coordinated playdates and ensured nap times were observed. A true multitasker!
Nap Time’s Value
Those peaceful afternoon hours with the boys asleep were a lifesaver for her sanity. Naps are just as crucial in school, too!
Aren’t these the real gems of a college education? I might not have been the best student, but I think my argument holds a lot of weight. Just as long as my child doesn’t get any ideas about skipping out on formal education!

In summary, life experiences often teach us the lessons that formal education might miss, especially in the realm of parenting. It’s a joy to see how much can be learned outside of the traditional classroom setting!
