Dear Emma,
I hope this letter reaches you in high spirits after your first night in the dorm. Your text assured me that you’ve survived your initial day of independence, which is a relief!
I must confess, as I drove away after moving you in, I had some second thoughts. Especially after spotting that container of takeout you left on the table. Anyone who has shared a space with you knows you have a knack for leaving your mark wherever you go. Don’t worry—I’ll tackle your room in a few days, armed with gloves and a sense of humor.
First Piece of Advice
Keep your space tidy and remember to flush. Your siblings insisted I add that last tip!
Eighteen years seemed like an eternity until the moment I held you in my arms. Since then, time has flown by quicker than I could have imagined. The more I tried to hold on, the faster it slipped away. Those years should have equipped you with everything you need, but somehow, our roles have shifted. I’ve learned so much about letting go, and while it’s challenging, every mother must encourage her chick to take flight. I have every faith that you won’t just fly—you’ll soar.
You are the reason I became a mother. I’ve improved over the years, learning from my early blunders with you, my firstborn. Seven kids later, I think I’ve finally found my groove, but I hope I didn’t mess you up too much in the process!
I always believed you’d thrive on your own. You have a unique spirit—stubborn and full of life. I remember how, at preschool, you would hum the clean-up song while strategically moving toys without ever actually tidying up. Your teachers were amused, and I was both embarrassed and proud. That bit of mischief continued at home!
Contributing Your Fair Share
Now that you’re independent, remember to contribute your fair share—whether at home, school, or work. Sometimes, you’ll need to exceed expectations. Roll up your sleeves and tackle tasks with a smile; trust me, your efforts will be recognized.
You’ve always been a leader, unafraid to speak your mind, even correcting your teachers. One kindergarten teacher once told me, “This one is destined for greatness.” I wasn’t sure if I should be proud or a bit concerned.
Your confidence draws people in, but remember to remain humble. While you have a lot to offer, others do too. Some shine from within; take time to appreciate those around you.
Beware of the Freshman 15
Beware of the “Freshman 15”—it can sneak up on you. Make sure to stay active and get outside your dorm. Life is about more than scrolling through social media. I know sports weren’t your favorite, but you have a beautiful campus to explore outside your window. Embrace it!
You’ve never been one to succumb to peer pressure. I fondly recall how, during DARE, you looked at your dad in disbelief when he sipped wine at dinner. That’s a good sign that you’ll make wise choices as you dive into college life.
Protecting Your Individuality
Don’t lose that spark of individuality that has always defined you—whether it’s wearing quirky accessories or standing up for your beliefs. Always protect that fire within you.
Prioritize Your Studies
As you embark on this new journey, prioritize your studies. Stay on top of your assignments, communicate with your professors, and always strive for excellence. You may not always agree with your teachers, but respect is crucial.
Lastly, don’t forget to smile and embrace the moments that come your way. College is a precious time, and you have immense potential to achieve remarkable things.
With all my love and support,
Mom
