Pregnancy transforms your life in ways that go far beyond just updating your census information. It brings a unique glow, can make you feel heavier, disrupts your sleep, and might even make you want to unleash your inner warrior on strangers who hand kids toy guns. And let’s not forget the bizarre behaviors that come along with this incredible journey. Here are some of the most notable ways pregnancy can shake up your previously calm existence…

  1. Heightened Paranoia: Pregnancy can trigger feelings and thoughts that seem foreign to you, and with raging hormones at play, your mental equilibrium might go out the window. Is pregnancy paranoia a real phenomenon? If science hasn’t looked into it, they should—after they tackle curing all forms of cancer, AIDS, and those pesky genetically modified foods, of course.
  2. Frequent Tears: Even when I’m not pregnant, I’m just a heartfelt video away from tears. Whether it’s an elderly couple or those heart-wrenching Sarah McLachlan dog commercials, I’m easily moved. While pregnant, it feels like I just need a hint of a reason to cry—and that’s where the drama on TV steps in.
  3. Uncontrollable Cravings: I was relieved to escape being pregnant during Halloween, but then Easter rolled around, and it was just as challenging. Chocolate? Jellybeans? Forget throwing away leftovers! And those food commercials after 8 PM? They’re like sirens calling me to raid my pantry. I know I shouldn’t be influenced, but somehow, I find myself rummaging for something sweet or savory that resembles the deliciousness on screen.
  4. Anger Management Issues: While pregnancy paranoia might not be a widely discussed topic, pregnancy rage certainly is. Suddenly, every toy in your child’s collection becomes overly irritating. Those cheerful musical toys? They seem to have been designed to test your patience. As I contemplate tossing them into the abyss, I realize that pregnancy has altered my tolerance levels drastically.
  5. Fearful Moments: Is that a pink juice oozing from my burger or something more concerning? Should that person walking towards me be avoided? Pregnancy brings about a plethora of worries—from food safety to the health of your unborn child. And let’s be honest: googling your questions online can lead to a state of constant panic.
  6. Feeling a Bit Off: This feeling stems not just from the pregnancy and its accompanying hormones, but also from others who seem quick to blame mood swings on those hormones. Sure, I’m dealing with hormonal changes, but that doesn’t mean you’re not being annoying! Just because I’m having an off day doesn’t give anyone the right to dismiss my feelings.
  7. Animalistic Behavior: Yes, I’m the person scratching my belly in public and belching in the supermarket line. The itching and discomfort can feel overwhelming, and somehow, I find myself sharing these moments with anyone who will listen. It’s like I’ve transformed into a wild creature navigating a new world.
  8. Feeling Judged: And can we talk about the sympathetic looks when it comes to not drinking alcohol? Yes, I can’t drink, but that’s okay. I will be back to enjoying a glass of wine soon enough! The pitying glances and apologies are unnecessary. I can navigate this sober journey without the burden of your concerns.

Despite all these challenges, I know I’ll be okay. We all will be. Thank goodness for that!
