You know those language-learning CDs that claim you can easily master Spanish, French, or even Mandarin? Well, I’m still waiting for the equivalent for Toddler Talk!
You know exactly what I mean—those adorable yet utterly perplexing words that come out of your once-cooing little one, who has suddenly decided to express themselves verbally. Just the other day, my newly 2-year-old daughter approached me while I was doing the dishes, pacifier firmly in place, and said something that sounded like, “globby wobbly boo.” We went back and forth for what felt like forever, both of us in fits of laughter and tears, and I still had no idea what she meant. In the end, I opted for a snack, and guess what? She was thrilled!
I know it’s not the best practice to pacify kids with food, but sometimes you just have to do what works, right? Cookies it is!
Most of the time, her speech is quite clear, but there are definitely those moments of confusion. So, I thought it might be fun to compile a list of the words and phrases that I wish were included on those hypothetical toddler language CDs.
- Oooce = Juice
- Moo = Milk (at least she connects it to the right source!)
- Go Ide! = I want to go on the slide
- Wing Mama! = I want to swing, Mom
- Me it = I want to do it
- MINE! = mine (this one is all in the tone—denial is a great coping mechanism!)
- NOOOOOOOOOOO! = No (this one is a challenge to translate, but you get the vibe)
- Ray Ray = Raisins
- Shooce = Shoes
- Brusheeth = Brush teeth
- Ahside = Outside
- Ownt no = I don’t know
- Globby wobbly boo = I’m completely lost (feel free to suggest ideas for that one!)
Honestly, I’d pay a small fortune for CDs that taught this particular dialect. I might even consider creating them myself—after all, surely you know someone who could benefit from a toddler translation guide, right?
