Reflections on Parenting and Life’s Complexities

A few days back, while we were driving, a news segment came on about marriage equality. From the backseat, Emma asked what they were discussing. In simple terms, I explained that in some places, two men or two women can marry if they love each other, but sadly, that isn’t true everywhere. She nodded and quickly shifted her focus back to her brother, Max, who was kicking her seat. My partner, Tom, sighed and remarked how tough it is to explain such topics to kids. I responded, “Not really, it’s straightforward. It’s just complicated for us adults.”

Max frequently inquires about religion. Although they attend a Jewish school, my own beliefs don’t quite align with what they’re learning. A few weeks prior, we passed a church and Max asked, “What do people do in there?” I told him they pray to God, the God they believe in. “Like us?” he asked. “So, people pray to God in all different buildings?” I confirmed, and it struck me how simple that concept is at its core.

At times, the weight of parenting overwhelms me. We’re tasked with shaping their values and guiding them through a world we’re still trying to understand ourselves. How do you explain devastating events happening far away when you’re struggling to make sense of them yourself? I can barely help Emma with her homework most nights, and Tom still can’t operate the dishwasher. Our bills pile up, summer plans remain unmade, and yet we are expected to teach our children?

But then, my kids remind me that life isn’t all that complex. It boils down to love and hope—the fundamental lessons we strive to impart. Despite our imperfections as parents, I realize we’re doing alright.
