Let’s Ditch the Labels: Embracing Unique Parenting Styles

What’s with this trend of boxing moms into neat little categories? Every mom I know loves to showcase her parenting style, whether it’s Natural Parenting, Attachment Parenting, or Gentle Parenting. But why has this labeling become so prevalent? More importantly, why don’t I find myself fitting into any of these categories?

It’s reminiscent of shopping for jeans—trying on countless pairs, only to find that none seem to fit quite right. Some are perfect for my hips but too tight around the waist, while others are too short but fit my thighs beautifully. The same frustration applies to parenting labels. Am I doing something wrong because I don’t fit neatly into any one box?

Where do I belong? I exclusively breastfeed, which might make me a natural parent, while co-sleeping could suggest I’m an attachment parent. My kids come from different fathers, which must make me a “trashy mama” in someone’s eyes. And since my partner and I aren’t married, I guess that makes me an “alt mama.” But hold on! I also spank my older kids, enjoy shooting with BB guns (yes, even gifting a Red Rider to my six-year-old!), and sometimes I yell. I have moments where I sit in the shower with the water running, feeling overwhelmed. I even spray my kids with the hose when they’re playing outside, and I take them to church occasionally. Oh, and let’s not forget how much I adore their sweet, sweaty smell after a day of play.

Whatever happened to just being a mom? This high school clique vibe really gets to me. I didn’t fit in back then, and I don’t plan to now. I’m carving my own path, and frankly, my kids are turning out pretty awesome. So, no, I don’t think I’m doing it wrong; I’m doing it just right. And you probably are too.
