Just after the 4th of July, while I’m still savoring hot dogs, slurping watermelon, and enjoying lazy days by the pool, I stumbled upon it: the bright, shiny boxes of crayons stacked high, almost as if they were smiling. The vibrant spiral notebooks, the classic Elmer’s Glue bottles, and those adorable little scissors for tiny hands—each item neatly displayed where just weeks ago there were sunblock products.
Dear retailers, can we pause for a moment? Can we please call that moment SUMMER?
I still crave popsicles, sunscreen, beach buckets, and lazy afternoons. My mind, along with my child’s, is still in summer mode, free from any form of structure. So when I see reams of wide-ruled paper and rulers glaring at me from store shelves in the second week of July, it makes me a bit anxious.
I’m just not ready, folks. Not at all.
I still have plenty of leisurely days ahead, mornings to sleep in, and lunches I don’t have to plan or pack. I need our seasons to be driven by our joy and not by the displays at the front of the store. I want it to be SUMMER, not the countdown to fall.
So, I’m happily tossing aside the fall catalogs and savoring corn on the cob and refreshing lemonade for a little while longer.
I know that in a month, after we’ve crammed in every summer activity possible, I’ll be joyfully pushing my cart down the school supply aisle, singing with enough excitement to warrant my own musical number. And then, just a week later, the Christmas trees will appear.
