My Dream Home Without the Chaos of Family Life

When Tom and I got married, we enjoyed a delightful few months of wedded bliss—thanks mainly to the fact that we had already been living together. If we had come straight from our honeymoon to merge our lives and belongings, it would have been a whole different story. I remember those early days vividly, and they were far from idyllic.

I often found myself wishing for a little privacy, especially when I wanted to tackle not-so-glamorous personal grooming tasks. Getting ready for a night out became less thrilling and more of a wrestling match over the limited space at the bathroom sink. Shaving my legs became a balancing act as he used the toilet in earshot, and the bed seemed to become messy the moment he lounged on it, with his socks piling up at the foot just to annoy me. We definitely had our fair share of adjustments to make.

Then there were Tom’s unsolicited opinions about decor—something I thought was my territory. I still chuckle at the time he insisted on attending a florist meeting for our wedding flowers and ended up dozing off, snoring loudly during the presentation. Does he truly care? Why can’t I just have my little domain for home decor? Hands off, darling. Why not focus on building a man cave instead?

Fast forward fifteen years, and aside from the occasional argument over who should replace the toilet paper or the ongoing recycling saga, I have come to embrace life with my husband and our wonderful children. Most days, I genuinely enjoy it. Yet, I can’t help but daydream about an ideal home where I could live without the delightful chaos of family life.

Would you like a glimpse into this fantasy?

Let’s start in the bedroom, featuring soft pink bedding, free from stray hairs and crumbs. Next, the bathroom would have a single sink—no hair clippings or toothpaste smudges allowed—and a clawfoot tub adorned with a glamorous chandelier, purely for aesthetics.

I would also have a dressing room, naturally, providing a serene space for my makeup and jewelry. The kitchen would revolve around my beloved pink Cuisinart mixer, always infused with the delightful scent of vanilla candles. Lastly, there would be a beautifully organized craft and gift-wrapping room that would make even Candy Spelling envious.

Though I hope our life continues to flourish together, this dream home will likely remain a whimsical idea in my mind. And honestly, that thought isn’t too bad.

(P.S. Tom, while you were out, I decided we’re switching sides of the bed. Hope you don’t mind!)
