A Scene: Parenting Mayhem
In a house teeming with chaos, the atmosphere is thick with the scent of damp pool towels and a sink overflowing with dirty dishes.
Enter Mia, who is wailing at the top of her lungs for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, Jake, completely nude, is racing around the living room, gleefully declaring, “I have a big booty!” across the space. Not to be outdone, Max, sporting six pairs of socks, attempts an impromptu skating performance on the family room floor.
Just as the babysitter walks in, Jake lets out a piercing “No!” and Max announces his urgent need to use the bathroom. Mia, in a huff, storms up the stairs.
Amidst the frenzy, I excitedly exclaim, “You won’t believe this! I just landed a book deal—an actual book deal!”
From the bathroom, Max calls out, “Mom, hurry! I need you to wipe me!”
Jake, meanwhile, has taken to inspecting his nose, and without a care, wipes the evidence of his findings on my jeans before strutting away.
Mia, discovering that her computer game has been shut off, accuses me of being the worst mother in the universe.
The babysitter, clearly intrigued, asks, “That’s fantastic! What’s the book about?”
Max chimes in, “I don’t think you wiped me all the way; I feel poop in my tushy.”
Mia, undeterred, declares, “Did you not hear me? You are the meanest mom ever! Meaner than any of my friends’ parents. Meaner than Miss Hannigan. Meaner than a witch! Just so so so mean.”
An awkward silence fills the room.
“Um, parenting…” I mumble, only to be met with a blank stare from the sitter.
And just like that, the scene closes.
